Definition

It is a developmental odontogenic
epithelialized cyst , which occurs on the
lateral aspect or between the roots of
vital teeth.
Origin & Pathogenesis

It arises initially as lateral dentigerous

cyst in which the tooth manage to erupt
and lie finally on the lateral aspect of the
root.
It arises from reduced enamel
epithelium, other suggest: dental lamina,
rests of Malassez.
Clinical features

It is a rare cyst ( 1.5% of all jaw cysts).

Age: wide range , mean 50 years.
Sex: male predilection.
Site: canine-premolar area of mandible,
and anterior maxilla.
It is asymptomatic , rarely produce
gingival swelling on the buccal aspect.
X-ray

Well defined with sclerotic margin

rounded or ovoid radiolucency at the
lateral aspect of the root.
Histopathology

Lined by thin non-keratinized squamous

or cuboidal epithelium with focal plaque-
like thickenings.
Treatment

Enucleation.
Botryoid odontogenic cyst

It is a variant of lateral periodontal cyst,

which shows multilocular growth
resemble a bunch of grapes.
Gingival cyst of adults
Definition

It is a developmental odontogenic
epithelialized cyst, located in the gingiva
of adults.
Origin

Dental lamia.
Clinical features

Occurs in the attached gingiva or

interdental papilla, on the buccal aspect.
Painless dome-like bluish swelling, less
than 0.5 cm.
Site: canine-premolar region of
mandible.
Age: 5th to 6th decades of life.
X-ray

No radiographic changes.
Rarely, superficial erosions of bone.
Histopathology

Thin epithelium (1-2 cell thick) or thick

stratified squamous epithelium.
Sometimes, with focal epithelial
thickenings.
Treatment

Simple excision.
Gingival cyst of
infants
Definition

It is a developmental odontogenic
epithelialized cyst located in the alveolar
mucosa of infants.
Clinical features

Present at birth as multiple whitish

papules ( 2-3 mm in diameter)
Histopathology

Thin parakeratinized stratified squamous

epithelium.
Keratin fills the cystic cavity.
Treatment

No treatment.
