Pros Of AR Games
Why Location (AR) Games Are Fun
The appeal of AR games comes from the fact that they are so different
from something like Candy Crush or other more traditional games. With
a location game, you have to be an active participant to get the full
experience. Communities also develop to help participants gather
information on how to best play the game, share tips and tricks, and build
strong friendships beyond the game.
Community really is where AR games tend to shine. Competitive games
like Ingress develop their own subcultures and strategies, which enables
players across the world to act in tandem to pull off difficult operations.
Meanwhile, players also work together to make equally impressive feats.
Because it works with unique places in the community that become
centres of gameplay, players are encouraged to join and create a close-knit
gaming community and culture. With the huge following Pokmon already
has, Pokmon Go is likely to have similar community-building qualities
and benefits.
Cons of AR Games
The Downsides of Location Games
While location games are a lot of fun and get you to interact with
other players and the world around you, they are not without their
downsides. First and foremost is the amount of battery they use.
Because you need to use a combination of GPS and Wi-Fi to
determine your location, there is increased pressure on your
battery. This is especially true in places with low reception. Many
dedicated AR players get around this problem by carrying extra
batteries or power packs like Mophie battery cases. These can be
bought for relatively little money and are useful outside of the
gaming experience as well. Many phones today also are becoming
more energy efficient and have larger batteries. For example, the
iPhone 6s has up to 14 hours of talk time and up to 10 days of
standby time.
