Matter part I
What is a pure substance?

A pure substance is a substance that

cannot be separated by physical
means.

Examples of pure substances include water,

gold, carbon dioxide, oxygen and hydrogen.
Pure Substances (Characteristics)

1st. A pure substance is made up of one type of

particle.
Examples:
The particle that makes up water is H2O.
The particle that makes up carbon dioxide is CO2.
Pure Substances (Characteristics)

2nd. Each pure substance has its own chemical

and physical properties which help identify it.
Examples:
Water has a melting point of 0C and a boiling
point of 100C. It is also colourless and odorless.
Gold is yellow, solid at room temperature and it
is a good conductor of electricity (it is a metal)
Boiling Point of
Water 100C

Freezing Point of
Water 0C

Melting Point of Ice

0C
Pure gold has a bright yellow colour and is shiny.

Gol has no odour (it smells nothing)

Melting Point of Gold 1065C

Boiling Point of Gold 2800C

Pure substances can be divided into two
groups:

Compounds are substances formed

Mixtures are Everywhere!

What is a mixture? Anything you can combine

is a mixture.
There are Two Types of Mixtures

Homogeneous Heterogeneous mixtures

mixtures = solutions are substances that can be
have the same separated easily into its
composition parts and those parts
have their original
throughout, and the properties. A
individual parts of heterogeneous mixture
the mixture are not is not blended together
easily identifiable. (Ex. Fruit salad, pizza,
sand and water)
