BACKGROUND
 1929 – the Coleman Report recommended a reading based
approach to foreign language teaching for use in American
school and colleges.
 The American and British continuations of the Direct Method.
 US involved in WW II – give significant effect on language
teaching in America.
 Set up a special language training program - to supply the US
government with personnnel who were fluent in German,
French, Italian, Chinese and other language
 Language Training Program – Arme Specialized Training
Program (ASTP) was established
 1939 – university of Michigan develop the first
English Language Institute in US
 Charles Fries – applied the principles of structural
linguistics to language teaching
 Grammar or structure was the starting point
 The language was taught by systematic attention to
pronunciation and by intensive oral drilling of its basic
sentence.
 The approach developed by linguists at Michigan
and other universities became known variously as
the Oral Approach, The Aural-Oral Approach and
Structural Approach.
 Language was identified with speech and speech
was approached through structure.
 In the mid-1950s, the method came to be known as
Audiolingualism.
 The combination of structural lingustic theory,
contrastive analysis, aural-oral procedure, and
behaviorist psycology led to Audiolingual
Method.
