collecting hydrogen gas can be done

by reacting active metal like zinc with a

strong acid such as hydrochloric acid.
since hydrogen gas is almost insoluble in
water, it ca be collected by
displacement of water using an inverted
test tube. In doing so, the following
materials and apparatuses should be
prepared
Iron stand and a clamp
Test tubes
Pneumatic trough, rubber stoppers
Hydrogen generator
Delivery tube
Test tubes holder
Glass tubing
Beaker
Concentrated hydrochloric acid
Zinc metal
1. Prepare the set-up (iron stand, clamp and
the hydrogen generator) in the table and
the chemicals (Zn an HCl) to be used.
2. Fill three test tubes with water and allow
them lie in pneumatic trough which is half-
filled of water. have the rubber stoppers
handy.
3. Attach the test tube into the clamp. Then
put generous amount of metal zinc in the
test tube into the clamp.
4. Put generous amount of metal zinc in the
test tube and pour concentrated
hydrochloric acid.
5. Quickly attach the end of the delivery tube
into the opening of the test tube.
6. Connect a glass tubing and a link it to the
trough filling it with the hydrogen gas
7. Each tube is filled, quickly put stopper at
the opening of the test tube before
removing it from the water and put it aside
in the test tube rack.
The simple and yet effective process of
collecting hydrogen gas paves the
way to be more knowledgeable about
the properties of hydrogen gas
