INTERPRETATION OF

LABORATORY TESTS
CBC
CHEST X-RAY
ABG
SPUTUM GS
CBC
Leukocytosis in association with
neutrophilia
Absolute ct of >8000/cumm
Can be caused by:
Acute infection pneumonia, meningitis, etc
Inflammation vasculitis
Acute hemorrhage
Acute hemolysis of RBC
Myeloproliverative disease
Tissue necrosis burns, gangrene, tumor necrosis
Steroid administration prednisone 40 mg orally
Physiologic condition exercise, emotional stress,
menstruation, etc
Chest X-Ray
Homogenous infiltration right mid field
lung to base
Homogenous infiltration indicates
consolidation
May be cause by:
S. pneumoniae infection lobar
S. aureus infection lobular(bronchopneumonia)
ABG
Respiratory Alkalosis
Increase pH, decrease pCO2 w/normal
bicarbonate ion
Caused by hyperventilation
Moderate hypoxemia
Decrease pO2
Tissue hypoxia
Decrease sO2
Compensatory mechanism of the body to
hyperventilate due to tissue hypoxia will
eventually lead to respiratory alkalosis
Sputum GS
G(+)cocci in clusters
Suggestive of Staphyloccus spp.
S. pneumoniae g(+)diplococci appear in
lancet shape or in chain
H. influenzae small, g(-)pleomorphic
coccoid bacilli
Anaerobes most are g(-)bacilli
Peptostreptococci g(+)cocci, variable size
and shape
