INTRODUCTION
Energy meter
4
CHALLENGES IN POWER SECTOR
Recovering electricity dues from
Government departments
Apartment blocks
Commercial complex
Rural areas etc
Electricity Theft
Complicated Billing Process
Wastage of Energy
5
DISADVANTAGES WITH PRESENT SYSTEM OF
ELECTRICITY BILLING
Reading bills from the metre is done by man
consumer has to line up in queues for the payment
late in payment may lead to extra dues
sometimes late due may result in disconnection of the supply
by the supplier

What is a prepaid energy
meter???

Description

The card reader will read the stored information and delete
the information from the EEPROM IC(smart card) using the
MC program, so that the smart card cannot be reused by
others.
1. In our project we also have a provision
2. To give an alarm sound to consumer before the whole
amount is reduced.

PPM System Architecture

Master Station: Holds the integrated database of all the vending stations. Creation,
edition and deletion of users account are also done from here. In the master station, the
values of the meter settings variables are given.
Vending Station: Office where the clients go to buy credits and holds the database of
all local users.
Smart card Unit: A smart card reader/writer is interfaced using the serial three wire
bus protocol with the CPU to read/write data to smart card.
The SLE4428 type smart card has been used with 1KB of non-volatile EEPROM
memory and it is write-protected by a 16 bit password. Different meter settings and
meter status variables are mapped in different memory locations of the smart card.

Pre-paid electricity protocol
Five phases for controlling the consumption of electricity
I. authentication
II. balance checking
III. decision making
IV. decision process
V. termination

Benefits to consumers
pay as you go
No need to stand in queues
no surprising bills
no bill disputes
allow customers to budget expenses
Help customer contribute towards energy
conservation
15
DISADVANTAGES
Running out of energy, especially at odd hours of the day
Issues with top up points including:
Top up points can be located far away from your house
Top up points are rarely open late at night
Not all top up points cater for electricity
The machines may not be working
Loss of keys or cards
Higher costs compared with direct debit or standard credit
customers
16
RECENT INITIATIVES
17
FUTURE SCOPE
Theft detection
Possible to recharge the meter from anywhere just by
sending a small message or through internet
For more efficient and fast system
By small changes the ordinary energy meter can be
converted into prepaid energy meter, so that consumers
account made online.
