Angles

Year 7 HAP
Transversals

Learning Intention: To remember the relationships with

transversals and parallel lines.
70

DO NOW:
Find the value of angle .
40
Parts of an angle

Angles are made of two lines, called arms that meet

at a point, called a vertex.

Angles are measured in

degrees and use the symbol
.
Ex: 90, 256, 360
Classification of Angles

Name Size Range(x) Diagram

Draw this table on the
Acute 0<x<90
right.
Fill in the angle range Right X=90
that fits that name. Obtuse 90<x<180
Then draw an angle
Straight X=180
that is an example of
this type, make sure Reflex 180<x<360
you label the size of the Revolution 360
angle. (Perigon)
Naming R
Angles
Angles are named by three letter
combinations.

The first and last letters refer to the arms and

the middle letter is the vertex. Z
T
The symbol is written in front to denote an
angle name.
RTZ or ZTR
Relationships of Angles

Complementary Supplementary
Complementary angles are two Supplementary angles are two
angles that add up to 90. angles that add up to 180.

Vertically Transversal

Opposite

A line that intersects two or more other lines.

Transversal

Transversals

A line that intersects two or more other lines.

Transversal Relationships

Corresponding Angles
Both on the same side of the
transversal and either both on top or A&C
bottom of their lines
B
Alternate Angles A
Between the two lines, but on
opposite sides of the transversal
A&D

D
Co-interior Angles
C
Between the lines cut by the B&D
transversal and on the same side of
it.
Parallel Lines

Parallel lines are lines

that never cross.

The symbol is used

to denote parallel
lines.

Ex. AB XY
Perpendicular
Lines
Perpendicular lines
are lines that cross to
form 90 angles.

The symbol used to

denote
perpendicular lines is
.

Ex. ABOX
What a transversal cuts parallel lines

Corresponding Angles
Both on the same side of the
transversal and either both on top or A=C A B
bottom of their lines
Alternate Angles
Between the two lines, but on
opposite sides of the transversal
A=F
F
Co-interior Angles
C
Between the lines cut by the B=F
transversal and on the same side of
it.

ONLY WORKS IF A SET OF PARALLEL LINES HAS BEEN CUT BY A TRANSVERSAL.

You Do

Draw transversal
and parallel lines
shown. Then find
the value of all 65

the angles.
PROVE

How can you prove if two lines crossed by a transversal are

parallel?
YOU DO

Write the
names of each
angle and the
value of that
angle.
YOU DO
Triangles

right-angled triangle acute-angled triangle obtuse-angled triangle

One of its angles equal to 90 Has all angles smaller than 90 Has an angle greater than 90
Angles in a triangle

Angle Sum Interior and Exterior Angles

The sum of the three angles in any

triangle is always 180
Angles in
polygons
Regular polygons all have fixed sum of interior angles depending
on the number of sides it has.

How can you prove that a shape with the same number of sides
will have the same angle sum given that triangles have an angle
sum of 180?

What is a general way to calculate the angle sum of a shape

given the number of sides?
Look at the exterior angles of a
range of different shapes.

What is the sum of the exterior

angles?
Exterior Angles of
Polygons The sum of the exterior angles of
a regular polygon will always
equal 360
