disorder where there is enlargement,which is
caused by formation of multiple cysts on the
kidneys
WHAT ARE KIDNEY CYSTS ?

 €Kidney cysts are pocket of fluid

WHAT CAUSES THIS DISEASE ?
 €Polycystic kidney
 disease is an
inherited disease.
If one of the parent
carries this trait
then the child has
50% of getting this
disorder.
 Two major types of inherited
Polycystic Kidney Disease

€Autosomal dominant PKD is the most


common inherited form. Symptoms
usually develop between the ages of 30
and 40, but they can begin earlier, even
in childhood. About 90 percent of all
PKD cases are autosomal dominant
PKD.
€Autosomal recessive PKD is a rare
inherited form. Symptoms of autosomal
recessive PKD begin in the earliest
months of life, even in the womb.
SYMPTOMS

 €Abdominal pain or tenderness


 Blood in the urine
 Excessive urination at night
 Flank pain on one or both sides
 Drowsiness
 High blood pressure
 Joint pain
 €Nail abnormalities
 €Painful menstruation
HOW IS IT DETECTED

 €Abdominal ultrasound
 Abdominal CT scan
 Abdominal MRI scan
TREATMENT

€The purpose of the treatment is to control


symptoms Treatment may include :
 €Blood pressure medicines
 €Diuretics
 €Low-salt diet
€There is no treatment to prevent the cysts
from forming or enlarging
 €Kidney transplantation
 €Kidney dialysis
