Theory
The second conditional uses the past
simple after if, then 'would' and the
infinitive:
if + past simple, ...would + infinitive
We can use 'were' instead of 'was' with 'I' and 'he/she/it'.
This is mostly done in formal writing).
It has two uses.
First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that
are probably not going to be true. Maybe I'm imagining
some dream for instance.
If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably
won't win the lottery)
If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.
She would travel all over the world if she were rich.
She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never
studies, so this won't happen)
Second, we can use it to talk about
something in the present which is
impossible, because it's not true. Is that
clear? Have a look at the examples:
IfI had his number, I would call him. (I don't
have his number now, so it's impossible for
me to call him).
If
I were you, I wouldn't go out with that
man.
Positive
If I had 500 dollars to spend, I would buy an electric guitar.
If we found a bag full of money, we would return it to the owner
She would go to the party if she didnt have to study for the final
exam.
He would be a basketball player if he were taller.
If we met a famous actor, we would invite him for lunch.
She would be a great mother if she had children.
The teacher Alberto would be
negative

If she worked as an actress, she wouldnt live in this town.

If I were you, I wouldnt smoke at hospital
If I ate more, I wouldnt be so thin
interrogative
Would you marry me if I asked you?
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do
today?
If you could travel through time, what year would you visit?
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?
If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?
If you could fix one of the worlds problems, what would it be?
For instance:
If I had a lot of money, I would travel to 10 different countries

I would raise teachers salaries if I were the president of

Colombia.

If she worked as an actress, she wouldnt live in this town.

If they visited us more often, we would be better friends.

If he were more tolerant, he would have fewer problems.
