Phases of the Moon

Henry L. Langam, Jr.

Objectives
• To understand the concepts about the phases
of the moon
• To explain the phases of the moon
• To illustrate the phases of the moon
• To predict the phases of the moon
Have you ever wondered why the
appearance of the moon changes
as the days goes by in a month?
Movement of the Moon
As a result we
can see the
same side of the
moon always
and we haven't
seen the other
side of the
moon since
then.

Rotation = days = Revolution
Phases of the Moon
•  Is the appearance of the illuminated
portion of the Moon as seen by an
observer, usually on Earth.
• lunar phases vary cyclically as the
Moon orbits the Earth, according to the
changing relative positions of
the Earth, Moon and Sun.
• It takes our Moon
about 29.5 days to
completely cycle
through all eight
phases.
• As the moon revolves
around the earth, the
illuminated portion
changes.

New Moon
• The side of the
moon facing the
Earth is not
illuminated.
• we can not see
the moon during
this phase.
Waxing Crescent
• part of the Moon
is beginning to
show.
• "waxing" because
each night a little
bit more is visible
for a little bit
longer.
First Quarter
• 1/2 of the moon
is visible for the
first half of the
evening
• then goes down,
leaving the sky
very dark.
Waxing Gibbous
• Most of the
Moon is visible
•  Moon remains in
the sky most of
the night.
• This denotes that
full moon is near.
Full Moon
• We can observe
the entire face of
the moon
• Moon will rise just
as the evening
begins, and will
set about the time
morning is
ushered in.
Waning Gibbous
• Each night, we
begin to see less
and less of the
Moon’s
illuminated face.
• This is what the
word "waning"
means.
Last Quarter
• we can see
exactly 1/2 of the
Moon's lighted
surface.
• It rises around
midnight, appears
at its highest in
the sky at dawn,
Waning Crescent
• Last phase in the
lunar cycle
• The moon is soon
to disappear.
• You can only see
small part of the
moon.
