The War of 1812
Disasters in Canada
General William Hull was given the task to
attack Canada from Detroit.
British General Isaac Brock attacked first,
surrounding Hulls forces in Detroit.
Brock then hinted to Hull that the Indians
would be uncontrollable in an attack and a
frightened Hull surrendered without a fight.

Brock then met American General Van
Rensselaer near Niagara Falls and drove them
back into New York.

Old Ironsides The U.S.S. Constitution was
made of solid oak and British cannonballs just
bounced off its sides.
The American navy won victories against single
British warships.
The British ships outnumbered American by
50:1 and blockades kept them from being
more effective at sea.

Recovery of the Northwest
After Hulls surrender, command over the
American efforts was given to William Henry
Harrison.
Harrison realized he needed to control Lake
Erie to secure the territory.
Oliver Hazard Perry built his own ships and
used an inexperienced crew to defeat the British
at Lake Erie on Sept. 10, 1813.

Recovery of the Northwest
After this victory, the British and Americans
met in the Battle of the Thames on Oct 5,
1813.
Tecumseh was killed and the Americans won
the battle.

In 1814, Napoleon had surrendered to the
British, who turned their full attention to
America.
The British devised a 3-part plan to win the
war.

1. British troops would march south from
Canada through New York to separate New
England from the rest of the states.
2. Ships would attack and raid cities on the
East Coast.
3. A force would attack and capture New
Orleans.

The first stage failed when Americans defeated
the British fleet on Lake Champlain.
The British couldnt risk an invasion without
control of the lake and turned back.

The second stage was more successful.
The British won the Battle of Bladensburg,
scattering the American militia and capturing
Washington D.C.
They then moved their attention to Baltimore
and capturing Fort McHenry, which failed.
