Arts Integration

in the Classroom

By: Corey Gushikuma

Activity: Colorful Nature and
Stories

- Take on a nature walk and pick one thing you find most
interesting and draw it. After coloring and drawing,
think of a short story to tell that relates to your art
piece. Ready and Go!

- This will encourage creativity, problem solving, perseverance,

collaboration and the ability to work through rigorous demands of
multiple task to create a final product.
Arts Integration
- An approach in which students
construct and demonstrate
understanding through an art
form. Students engage in a
creative process which connects
an art form and another subject
and meets evolving objectives.
Why should arts be implemented

The arts, including the

literary arts, can
stimulate the senses,
challenge the intellect,
and touch the heart
(Cornett, 2011).
Building Blocks of
Arts Integration:
1. Philosophy: Why Integrate Literature?
2. Arts Literacy: Literary Content and Skills
3. Collaborative Planning
4. Aesthetic Literary Environment
5. Literature as a Core Art Form
6. Best Teaching Practices
7. Instructional Design: Routines and Structures
8. Differentiation for Diverse Needs
9. Assessment for Learning
10. Literary ARts Partnerships

Literacy and Art
Drama allows students to act out parts of a
book, which ultimately helps them to
comprehend and retell the story.
The rhythm in music builds fluency in
literacy.
- Vocabulary and rhyme are both in music,
which helps students to become effective
language users.

Presentation Reflection
- I rehearsed my presentation on co-worker Kristel, who used to be a fifth grade
teacher, but is currently a tech teacher. She is a very open minded person and really
creative, especially when it comes to things such as art. In her own experiences, she
knows just how effective it can be. She as a teacher always tried to incorporate arts
into her lessons, even if it was something as simple as arts and crafts. It allowed her
students to be hands on and have an opportunity to understand the content of what
they are learning from a different approach. Last school year she was teaching as a
fifth grade teacher and attending school to get her masters. During the time she was
in school, she was required to incorporate a variety of different strategies and
techniques. However, she was still allowed to integrate arts into them, to make it that
much more interesting and a better learning experience for the students. For
example, one of the projects that she always has them do every year is a might simple
one, but definitely one to remember. Every year she has her students create an I am
poem based on their own life. In addition to their poems, she has them create
watercolor backgrounds and choose colors that represent how they are and how they
feel about their life up until now. She uses many more other approaches for arts, such
as technology. All her efforts have helped her students be successful and learn.
