How do we know it exists

When scientists calculate how fast the stars

are moving with the amount of matter, it
doesn't nearly come close to the amount of
matter in the universe that that they
calculated. So some scientists believe that
there is a form of matter that we cannot see,
something dark.
What would happen if dark matter
didnt exist
Then all of the gravitational influences
affecting the planets, stars, and universes
would be accelerated and spread out more.
Alternate Theories
Scientists have tried to use theories without
using dark matter, they tried to modify the
general relativity, it is well tested on solar
system scales but not on galactic scale.
The problem with alternate theories is that
they have to explain all the existing evidence,
and explain independent cases.
What is dark matter made of
Most scientists believe that dark matter is not
made up of Baryonic matter (protons and
neutrons).
Instead they believe that the best possible
candidates are axions, sterile neutrinos or
WIMPS.
