Karylle Cornejo Alleanna Arandia A food chain is sequence of energy transfer among organisms to obtain energy and nutrients.
It also shows the feeding relationship
between different living things in a particular environment or habitat. A food chain represents a series of events in which food and energy are transferred from one organism in an ecosystem to another. They also show how animals depend on other organisms for food.
In any ecosystem, many food chains
overlap. Several consumers may eat the same kind of plant or animal for food. When this happens, the food chain forms a food web. A food web shows how food chains are related within an ecosystem. A food chain starts with the energy source, which is the sun. The next link in the chain is the group of organisms that make their own food – the photosynthetic organisms (producers). Next in the sequence are the organisms that eat the producers; they are the first- order consumers. The next link in the chain is the group of animals that eat the first-order consumers; they are the second-order consumers. These organisms, in turn, are eaten by larger animals – the predators; they are also called, third- order consumers. Each food chain ends with a top predator – an animal with no natural enemies.
Food Chain_ Introduction A food chain explains which organism eats another organism in the environment. The food chain is a linear sequence of organisms where nutrients and energy is transferred from one organism
