Crime and Punishment!

By the end of this lesson you should be

Explain some of the reasons why


people who break the law are punished.

Be able to describe the different


types of punishment available.

Say what Christians believe about


crime and punishment.
Task-
 Imagine that you are a panel of
judges.
 You have been asked to pass sentence on four
people who have been brought before your
court.
 It is your job to decide whether or not to
punish each person and what, if anything, that
punishment should be.
 You have several options available to you…
Methods of Punishment-
A Fine
This is an amount of money to Custodial Sentence

Retribution…
 Retribution is another word for “revenge”-
when someone hurts us or someone we
love, isn’t it natural to want revenge?

Show no pity: life for life, eye


for eye, tooth for tooth, hand
for hand, foot for foot.
(Deuteronomy 19:21)
…or Rehabilitation
 Rehabilitation aims to make the criminal
into a productive member of society-
Then Peter came to Jesus
and asked, “Lord, how
many times shall I forgive
my brother when he sins
against me? Up to seven
times? Jesus answered, “I
tell you, not seven times
but seventy seven times.”
(Matthew 18: 21+22)
And Finally…
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be
Christians believe
careful to do what is right in the eyes of
that justice must be everybody. If it is possible, as far as

everyone. Do not take revenge but
forgiveness. leave room for God’s wrath… If your
enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is
thirsty, give him something to drink…
Do not be overcome by evil, but
overcome evil with good.
