Introduction

• In Peninsular Malaysia, our primary source of electrical power supply

comes from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and owned a total of 34 power
station in Malaysia such as steam power plant, hydroelectric power plant
and various diesel power generators.

• These power substation continuously being developed, it is crucial to find

a method to maintain these electrical substations because if one of the
substation malfunction it will be affected to some area and human need
significantly.
Introduction
• Development Technology
Maintain the electrical substation. The thermal
camera also known as the thermographic
camera can detect infrared energy (heat) as
Figure 1 and convert it into an electronic signal
which is to produce the thermal image that we
can calculate the temperature. This instrument
can use for monitoring any sign of abnormal
heat.

Also, any stress on the power substation can be

detected earlier before any maintenance work
can be done and can alert the potential
problems.

Problem Statement
Monitoring electrical substation (pylon) by TNB is a challenging
task. Failure in substation will increase high cost and damage to
factories and household. From the human eye, we can’t see the
condition or the temperature of the pylon. So, we can’t detect
any abnormal hotspot within pylon. The main problems are due
to sever on bolt joining each pylon via the cable line.
Aims & Research Objectives
This study aims to develop a thermal imaging
system with the aid of the smartphone with
thermal capability.

Therefore the objectives of study are outlined as

follows:
I. To acquire thermal image of pylon using the
thermal smartphone.
II. To calibrate the thermal smartphone using
various technique.

Literature Study
Identifying the FLIR and thermal imagine in previous research:

• Studies from Lee et.al (2015) was study on infrared thermal imaging
system using FLIR ONE on a mobile phone. An alternative, the
thermal imager, converts the infrared radiation emitted from the
target into digital data and thus visualizes the whole temperature
map without contact with the target.

• Jaspers et. al (2017), they was study about the FLIR ONE thermal
imager for the assessment of burn wounds: Reliability and Validity.
The studied FLIR ONE thermal is a user-friendly device comes
in small size, lowprice and easy to use. The imager can be
attached to Android as well as IOS smartphone or tablets, and
the corresponding FLIR application allows analysis
immediately after registration.
Literature Study
Identifying the FLIR and thermal imagine in previous research:

• Dikici (2010) A Design Study of a Triple Field of View 8-12 (micro

sign) Waveband Airbone FLIR, was study on infrared thermal
imaging system on a mobile phone. Generally, the FLIR system is
required to operate in an environment with temperature ranging
from -30 to 50˚C. A mechanically active thermalization technique is
applied by driving a compensator lens in optical system.

• Wilson et. al (2017), they was study about Spatial Predictive Control
Using a Thermal Camera as Feedback. The studied Thermal
imaging is mainly focused on quality assistance and product
safety, yield forecasting and basic process measurements.
Which this thermal imaging has used in manufacturing
processes and quality control was provided, indicating the

Measuring Distance on Infrared Thermal Imager Temperature
Measurement Accuracy. The infrared thermal imager has been a
hot issue in the temperature measurement field for noncontact
measurement, wide temperature range, measuring result directly
perceived, low power consumption and good portability.

• Szajewska (2017), they was study about Development of the

Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) Technology. The studied A thermal
imaging camera consists of five components: an optic system,
detector, amplifier, signal processing, and display. Fire-service
specific thermal imaging cameras incorporate these
components in a heat-resistant, ruggedized, and waterproof

Significant & Contribution
• In general, the result of this study will provide
a new perspective in thermal image analysis.
• Exploit the capabilities of the thermal
smartphone to a new level
• Reduce the risk, time and cost for any
electrical maintenances staff
• With potential of this research to produce a
reliable end result, it is hope that this study
will give a paradigm shift for thermal
