Rotary Drilling
Drilling Team
Drilling Rig
Rotary rigs have the same basic drilling
equipment. tehe main component parts of a
rotary rig are the
1. Power system
2. Hoisting system
3. Fuid circulating system
4. Rotary system
5. Well Control
6. Well Monitoring system
Rig Power System
• Most rig power is consumed by the hoisting and fluid circulting system. the other
rig havesystem have much smaller power requirements . fortunately, the hoisting
system and circulating systems generally are not used simultaneously, so the
same engines can perform both function. Total power requirements for most rigs
are from 1000 to 3000 hp.
• modern rig are powered by internal-combustion diesel engines and generally
subclassified as
1. The diesel electric type
2. The direct-drive type
• Diesel electric rigs are those in which the main rig engines are used to geerate
elecricity. Electric power is transmitted easily to the various rig systems, where
the reqired work is accomplished through use of electric motors.
• Direct-drive rigs accomplish power transmission from the internal combustion
engines using gears, chains, belts, and cluches rather than generators and
motors.
Hoisting System
The function of the hoisting system is to provide a means of lowering or
raising drillstrings, casing strings, and other subsurface equipment into or
out of the hole. the principal components of the hoisting system are :
1. derrick and substructure
2. the block and tackle
3. the drawworks

two routine drilling operation performed with the hoiting system are called :
1. Making a connection
2. Making a trip
