Chemical Protective Clothing
is the last line of defense
against accidental contact
(e.g.,cuts, spills, splashes).
Choosing Chemical Protective Clothing
It’s a simple Two-Step Process !

Step 1:
Thorough Job Hazard Analysis

Step 2:

Job Hazard Analysis Review
What jobs are appropriate for a job hazard analysis?
• Jobs with the highest injury or illness rates

• Jobs with the potential to cause severe or disabling

injuries or illness, even if there is no history of previous
accidents

• Jobs in which one simple human error could lead to a

severe accident or injury
• Jobs that are new to your operation or have
undergone changes in processes and procedures

• Jobs complex enough to require written instructions

Job Hazard Analysis is an Exercise in
Detective Work.

The goal is to discover the following:

• What can go wrong?
• What are the consequences?
• How could it arise?
• What are other contributing factors?
• How likely is it that the hazard will occur?
Ask Questions

• Where it is happening (environment)?

• Who or what it is happening to (exposure)?

• What precipitates the hazard (trigger)?

• If “it hits the fan”, what would happen

(consequence)?

• Did we forget to account for something?

Chemical Protective Clothing Must Resist

Permeation

Degradation

Penetration
Permeation is the process by which a chemical
dissolves in or moves through a material on a
molecular basis.

FYI
Most of the time, there is no
visible evidence of chemical
permeation.
The time it takes a chemical to permeate through a
material is the breakthrough time.

The rate of permeation is determined by chemical

concentration, material thickness,humidity,temperature,
and pressure.

An acceptable material is one

where the breakthrough time
exceeds the period of
garment use.

Small increases in temperature can significantly

reduce the protective properties of any CPC
Degradation involves physical changes in a
material as the result of a chemical exposure,
use, or ambient conditions.

The most common observations of material

degradation are discoloration, swelling, loss of
physical strength, or deterioration
Penetration is the movement of chemicals
through zippers, seams, or imperfections in
a protective clothing material.

Blue Nitrile Gloves

Nomex Coveralls
Personal Work Boots

Most CPC will melt

and/or burn if exposed
excessive heat or fire.
