Atomic Theory before John Dalton

• A scientist and Indian scholar from 6th century BCE by

the name of Archarya Kanad is said to have a similar
theory of an atom to Dalton
Anu = Atom?

• Kanad influenced other scholars to learn and believe in

Anu’s
• an Anu is described to be a tiny indestructible individual
particle
• an Atom is the smallest possible measure of a single
element
States of matter

• Indian scholars believed there were

two states: absolute rest and
motion
• there are 3 basic states of matter:
solid, liquid, and gas
Dvyanuka and Tryanuka

• It was also said their was anu’s (atom) that combined in a

certain way to create a dvyanuka (diatomic molecules)
which consisted of two anu’s, and tryanuka (triatomic
molecules) which has three.
