Gorlin Nevus Syndrome

What is Gorlin Nevus Syndrome?
o It is a condition that affects areas of the body,
and raises the risk of developing many of different,
cancerous and noncancerous, tumors.
o Itis caused by a genetic mutation that can be
inherited on its own.
o The only was that can be spread is through genes. It
may go through every generation, or go through
every other one.
About Gorlin Nevus Syndrome
o Peoplediagnosed with GNS have a higher risk
than general of developing other tumors.
o Can
cause a brain tumor, called
Medulloblastoma, during childhood.
o Can include small depressions, or pits, in the skin
of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
o Nocomplete cure, but can control by removing
the spots that are found.
About Gorlin Nevus Syndrome
o Most common symptom is the development of basal
cell carcinoma.
o Most common type of skin cancer.
o Occurs mostly on the face, chest, and back.
o Lighter type of skins are more likely to develop.

o Most people develop keratocystic odontogenic tumors.


o These are benign tumors in the jaw.
o If untreated, tumors cause painful facial swelling and tooth
displacement.
Facts
o Affects an estimated 1 in 31,000 people.
o rational to 1 person in Cranberry Township
o More that 1 million new cases of basal cell carcinoma
are diagnosed each year in the US.
o Less than 1% of these skin cancers are related to GNS.
o Radiation
can increase the chances of tumor
development.
o Only 1 parent has too carry the gene.
o Can cause deformities in bones and skeletal tissue.
