Marking Out Process
(Body)

1. Mark face side and face edge

on the best two side of your
piece.

2. Turn your piece so

the face side is facing
you. From the left,
come in 22mm and
draw a line down.
Repeat on the ride
hand side.

3. From the top

come down 18mm
and draw a line
across. From the
bottom measure up
12mm and draw a
line across. As shown
in the picture, join
these points up to
form 4 triangles,
mark as waste.
How To Use A Plane

1. Get a good firm stance.

2. Hold the plane with two hands.

3. Your stronger foot in the

direction your planing with your
weaker foot perpendicular to it.

4. Use a lengthy firm stroke

forwards, do not lift or move the
plane in mid-action.

5. Do not run the plane back the

way on the piece.

6. Remove waste after every

stroke.
Manufacturing Process
(Body)
4. Using a plane, plane
the waste you have
marked. Since you are
planning across the
grain, plane halfway
from one side then
turn it around and do
the same.

5. Mark an 8mm chamfer on

either side of the top of the
piece. Mark as waste. Plane the
waste with your plane. As you
are planning with the grain,
you can plane the full way
through.

6. On the top of your

piece, join corner to
corner to find the
centre of the piece.
Mark a small “X” here
to signify that this is
to be drilled diameter
8mm.
How To Use A Tenon Saw

1. Hold the saw like a gun, with the

teeth facing down.

2. Keep your index finger for support

along the side of the handle of the
saw.

3. Keep a firm stance, your weak foot

facing forward and your other foot
perpendicular to it.

4. Pull back 3 times to get a groove for

the saw to sit into.

5. Use long strokes and put no pressure

on the blade of the saw, let the
weight of the saw take itself through
the piece.

6. Cut to the waste side of the line.

7. Mark face side and face

edge on your block that
measures 44mm by 44mm.

8. Turn your piece so the

face side is facing you. From
the left come in 10mm and
draw a line down. Do the
same on the right. From the
bottom come up 10mm and
mark a line across, do the
same at the top. Join these
points up to form triangle-
like shapes on each corner,
mark as waste.
9. Remove the waste using
your tenon saw and your
bench hook. You will then
see the octagon shape once
waste is removed. Mark
two diagonal lines on the
piece to find the centre.
Mark it so it is significant
that this is to be drilled
diameter 8mm and 10mm
deep.

Manufacturing Process
(Top and Track)
10. On the front of the
piece mark two lines
from corner to corner
to find the centre.
Mark the centre as it is
going to be drilled at
8mm diameter. And
10mm deep.

11. This piece is

your track. It
measures 130mm
by 30mm. Mark
your face side and
face edge. Complete
on both tracks.

12. From the top left hand corner step in 30mm and mark
it. Then step down 20mm and join them. From the top
right corner step in 10mm and down 10mm. Join these
marks and repeat on bottom two corners. Mark as waste.
Complete on both tracks.
Manufacturing Process
(Track and Dowel)
13. Remove all waste
with your Tenon saw
and bench hook, using
the correct methods.
Complete on both
tracks.

14. The dowel rod you

are given is 8mm
diameter and is in
lengths. The dowel
between the body and
top is to be cut at
22.5mm. Complete this
with your Tenon saw
and bench hook.

15. Using your pencil and

ruler, mark this dowel rod
at 100mm. Then using your
Tenon saw and bench
hook, cut the dowel to
length. This dowel acts as
the turret coming from the
top of the tank.
Gluing up Process
16. All pieces are now manufactured and the project is ready
for glue up. The short dowel is glued into the top of the tank
body and into the hole underneath the top of the tank. The
turret is then glued into the front of the top. The tracks are
nailed to the side of the body using 30mm panel pins. Tracks
are left 10mm below side of the tank.
