So far, we learned a
lot about our
country. For
example, 1) we
know that it has
many different
names, 2) we spent
a lot of time talking
about the American
flag, 3) and we
learned about the
different
monuments and
landmarks in
America by reading
this book and
looking at a map.

Think about 1 thing

can go. Turn to

The last couple

of days we read
about a place in
the USA
called____.
(Washington,
D.C) In a few
minutes, I’m
going to read
about another
place in the US
called the
West.

What do good
readers do?

Want to show
you some
pictures of
what the West
looks like so
you can think of
those pictures
when I read so
that you can
understand
better.

Have them tell

me where
West is (x3)
*Cards*

Turn and face me

Do you think we are going to be reading these cards for fun or to learn?

We will be reading informational text to learn. It is not pretend.

AFTER:

We already said that good readers go back and read, right? Sometimes, it is hard to understand something we read the first time. It it is helpful
to go back and read it again and make sure we pay close attention to what is happening.

EX: talks about a canyon on Card 1. Let’s say I do not understand what the author is talking about. That’s okay. I can go back and reread. *READ*
It tells me that a canyon is a crack deep in the ground and that the Grand Canyon is in Arizona. This picture helps me understand what a canyon
is too because it shows me what a canyon looks like. So I can reread AND I can look at the pictures to understand.

Know how the building and statues in this story are landmarks or important places and things in America? The places and things we read just
read about are land marks too.

MY LANGUAGE BOOK
Three of these pictures show
monuments which were build
where? (Washignton, D.C.) They
were built to honor important
people in our country’s history. Can
you find these pictures?
• Importance of each:
• Abraham Lincoln was a
great president (tie in to
freedom),
• George Washington
(first president ever for
our country)
• Dr. MLKJ – worked to
make things fair for
everyone in our country
(freedom as well)

• Other two pics

• bald eagle-eagle is on
our money (symbol for
freedom)
• What about our flag?
• Now you are going to
draw your favorite
symbol for America OR
you can come up with
your own. Then I am
going to ask a few
friends who want to
share their symbol to
come up and share.

count by 1’s. When I

to count but when I say
“freeze” I need you to
stop. What are you
going to do when I say
“freeze”?

This is 10. 10 and 10

*WRITE UNDER EACH

Count by 10s (10s VS

TEENS)

How many groups of 10

do I have? (10) How
many dots do I have
together? How many
dots did we just make?
(100) So, 10 groups of
10 makes 100!
