Definition : What is Rate?

 Indicator of Change

 In the form of Ratio

 Comparison between the changes

among 2 Values
Background
 There were a lot of mathematicians around the world that
involve in calculus development since ancient time to the
modern era.
 One of Calculus formula to find Rate is Chain Rule.
 There were Leibniz's notation that uses the
symbols dx and dy to represent infinitely small
(or infinitesimal) increments of x and y, respectively, just
as Δx and Δy represent finite increments of x and y,
respectively.
 It is named in honor of Gottfried Wilhelm von
Leibniz (1646–1716), German philosopher and
mathematician.

Presentation Question :

10 cm
Ice
A cubical block of ice has an edge of 10 cm. The ice
melts so that its volume decreases at a constant rate of 10 cm
25𝑐𝑚3 per hour and the block remain cubical.

 Find :-
 The rate of Change for length, l of the Ice Cube
during the ice melt. (dl/dt)
Information Given
Step 2: Identify variable quantities and notation
Volume = V (which 25𝑐𝑚3 )
Length = L (which 10cm)
Time = T

Step 3: Information
𝑑𝑣
Given = −25𝑐𝑚3 /ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟
𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑙
Find =?
𝑑𝑡
Step 4: Establish relationship between quantities V & L

Which is the formula:

Volume & Length

Volume= Length x Width x Height

Volume= Length x Length x Length

V = 𝐿3
Calculation
Step 5: Differentiate with respect to time , t

V = 𝐿3
𝑑 𝑑
𝑉 = (𝐿3 )
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑙

𝑑𝑣 𝑑𝑙
Differentiate = 3𝐿 2
( )
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡
Calculation
 Step 6: Substituting information from step 3 into step 5

𝑑𝑣 𝑑𝑙
= 3𝐿2
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑙
−25𝑐𝑚3 = 3( 10)2
𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑙
-25 = 300
𝑑𝑡

−25 𝑑𝑙
=
300 𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑙
= −0.083𝑐𝑚 / hour
𝑑𝑡
