Searching for lost files folders
If you need to find a file and know the name
of it you can use the search tool!!

Practicing using the search to to find a

file saved in your area – click on
START then SEARCH..

This is why you should always name

your files and folders correctly so
you can find them!!!!
Saving work / Back ups
You must always save your work as you go
along – don’t leave it to the end!!!

1. You must save a copy of your work in your school area!

(this gets backed up each day)

2. Don’t rely on your Memory stick! These break easily

The excuse of losing any work on your USB Memory stick

Common File Types
A file is a collection of related computer data.

How can we tell what type of files these are?

Need to understand what the file extension is?

File extensions
Different applications store and recognise different files in
different formats known as a file type e.g.

– Word use the extension .doc to indicate the file is a

text document
– Excel uses the extension .xls to indicate the file is a
spreadsheet
– PowerPoint uses the extension .ppt to indicate the file
is a presentation
File extensions are three letter codes after the full stop
in a file name that identifies the
document to its parent application
How do you see the
file extension?
• Open My Computer
• Tools menu select Folder Options
• No tick for the option
Hide extensions for
known file types
Which program type will open files
with the following file extensions

.DOC Usually word/text document (eg MS Word).

.XLS A spreadsheet document (MS Excel).

.PPT A Powerpoint document (MS Powerpoint).

.MDB A Database document (MS Access).

.TXT A raw text document.
