REAL CASES OF MELISSA

The virus spread rapidly after Smith unleashed it on the world. According to
statements made by FBI officials to Congress, the Melissa virus "wreaked havoc on
government and private sector networks".
1. Less than a week after the Melissa virus outbreak began, 30-year-old David L
Smith was arrested at his brother’s house in Eatontown, New Jersey.
2. Within weeks of the FBI arresting him, he was using a fake identity to
communicate with and track virus writers around the world.
3. The increase in e-mail traffic forced some companies to discontinue e-mail
programs until the virus was contained.
4. After a lengthy trial process, Smith lost his case and received a 20-month jail
sentence and also fine of $5,000 and forbade him from accessing computer
networks without court authorization.
5. Ultimately, the Melissa virus didn't cripple the Internet, but it was one of the first
computer viruses to get the public's attention.
IMPACT OF THE VIRUS
 Users who open an infected document in Word97 or Word2000 with macros
enabled will infect the Normal.dot template causing any documents
referencing this template to be infected with this macro virus.
 If the infected document is opened by another user, the document, including
the macro virus, will propagate. This could cause the user's document to be
propagated instead of the original document, and thereby leak sensitive
information.
 Indirectly, this virus could cause a denial of service on mail servers.
 Many large sites had reported performance problems with their mail servers
as a result of the propagation of this virus.
SOLUTIONS
 Nick Christenson of sendmail.com provided information about configuring
send mail to filter out messages that may contain the Melissa virus.
 With John Hardin's Procmail security filter package.
