Stress Distribution In Soil

PRESENTED BY:
Stress caused by a POINT LOAD
Sample Problem No. 1
A concentrated load of 1500 kN is applied at the ground surface at point A
whose coordinate is (0, 0, 0).
(a) Determine the vertical stress at a point 2.5m directly below A
(b) Determine the vertical stress at a point whose coordinate is (1.5, 0, 2.5)
(c) Determine the vertical stress at a point whose coordinate is (1.5, 2, 2.5)
Sample Problem No. 2
Consider a point load P = 5kN. Calculate the vertical stress increase at z = 0,
2m, 4m, 6m, 10m and 20m. Given x = 3m and y = 4m.
Vertical stress caused by a VERTICAL LINE LOAD
Sample Problem No. 3
A line load and a point load acting on the ground surface is shown in the
figure. Determine the increase in vertical stress at point A.
Sample Problem No. 4
The figure shows two line loads on the ground surface. Determine the increase
of stress at point A.
Vertical Stress caused by a HORIZONTAL LINE LOAD
Sample Problem No. 5
An inclined load with a magnitude of 1000lb/ft is shown in the figure.
Determine the increase of vertical stress at point A due to the line load.
Vertical stress BELOW THE CENTER OF A UNIFORMLY
LOADED CIRCULAR AREA
Vertical stress AT ANY POINT BELOW A UNIFORMLY LOADED
CIRCULAR AREA
Sample Problem No. 6
Consider a uniformly loaded flexible circular area on the ground surface, as
shown in the figure. Given R = 3m and uniform load q = 100kN/m2. Calculate
the increase in vertical stress at depths of 1.5m, 3m, 4.5m, 6m and 12m below
the ground surface for points at (a) r = 0 and (b) r = 4.5m.
Vertical stress caused by a RECTANGULARLY LOADED AREA
Sample Problem No. 7
The plan of a uniformly loaded rectangular area is shown in the figure.
Determine the vertical stress increase below point A’ at a depth of 4m.
Sample Problem No. 8
Determine the vertical stress increase below point A & B for a depth
of 5m for the foundation shown in figure MGEO – 06.
