REFRIGERANT USED IN

AIR CONDITIONING
There are 2 different types of air conditioning refrigerant currently
used in residential cooling systems. R-22, commonly referred to a
Freon and R410A, a blend considered to be more environmentally
friendly, sometimes called Puron.
REFRIGERANT
USED IN VEHICLE
Vehicle manufacturers have used two different refrigerants in automotive A/C systems. Most pre-1994
model year vehicles used R12. In 1995 and up model year vehicles use R134a refrigerant.

Even though there are a number of refrigerants on the market listed as acceptable for use in automotive
A/C systems by the U.S. EPA, only the two mentioned above are approved by vehicle manufacturers.
REFRIGERANT USED
IN ICE PLANT
Liquid ammonia acts a refrigerant in ice plants. Evaporation of a liquid
needs heat energy. When liquid ammonia vapourizes, it absorbs large
quantities of heat without changing its temperature. For these reasons,
ammonia is widely used as a refrigerant. About 17 g of liquid ammonia
absorbs 5,700 calories of heat from the surrounding water. This cools the
water and ultimately freeze it to ice.
Comparison between Ammonia VS Freon

• Lower Costs
• Better Coefficient of Performance (COP)
• Better Efficiency
• Smaller pipe dimensions required for the same refrigerant
capacity
• Immediate detectability of leaks
• Environment friendly
• Great tolerance to water contamination
