Google.cn
‡ Google.cn is the second most used search engine in China after Baidu.
‡ Google has been criticized for censoring its search results in cooperation
with the government of China and adhered to the —nternet censorship
policies of China, enforced by filters colloquially known as "The Great
Firewall of China".
‡ However, on January 12, 2010, in response to an apparent hacking of
Google's servers in an attempt to access information about Chinese
dissidents, Google announced that ³we are no longer willing to continue
censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we
will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we
could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all.´
‡ On March 22, 2010, after talks with Chinese authorities failed to reach an
agreement, the company redirected its censor-complying Google China
service to its Google Hong Kong service, which is outside the jurisdiction
of Chinese censorship laws.
