Single Acting Reciprocating Pump Mechanics

A single acting reciprocating pump consists of a cylinder with a piston that is connected to a crank by a piston rod and connecting rod. As the crank rotates, it causes the piston to move back and forth within the cylinder. On the inward stroke, the piston creates suction that draws liquid into the cylinder through the suction valve. On the outward stroke, the increased pressure inside the cylinder closes the suction valve and opens the delivery valve, forcing the liquid out through the delivery pipe.

Single acting Reciprocating Pump

Component of Reciprocating Pump

• A cylinder with a piston ,piston rod, connecting
rod and a crank

• Suction pipe

• Suction valve

• Delivery pipe

• Delivery valve
• When crank starts rotating ,the piston moves to & fro
in cylinder
• When crank is at A , the piston is at the extreme left
position in the cylinder
• As the crank is rotating from A to C (from o-180deg)
the piston is moving towards right in the cylinder
• The movement of the piston towards right creates
partial vacuum in cylinder
• But on the surface of the liquid in the sump
atmospheric pressure is acting > than the pressure
inside the cylinder
• Thus the liquid forced in the suction pipe from the
sump .
• This liquid opens the suction valve and enters in the
cylinder.
• When the crank is rotating from C to A (180-
360),thje piston from its extreme right
position moving towards left in the cyclinder

• Movement of piston towards left increase the

pressure of the liquid inside the cyclinder >
atmp pressure .hence suction valve closes
delivery valve opens
