ADOLESCENCE
• Adolescence comes from the
Lattin word 'Adolescere'
which means 'to grow to
maturity'
• Period of development from
the onset of puberty to the
age of maturity
• Span of years during which
boys & girls move from
childhood to adulthood
mentally,emotionally,
socially,and physically.
Psychological characteristics of adolescence

• Period of recapitulation
• Intensely emotional
• Interest in physical
attractiveness
• self -consciousness
• Sex-consciousness
• Peer group relationship
• Self-assertion
• Period of acquiring attitudes
& vaues
• Interest in ideals
LONELINESS AND ADOLESCENCE
It is the absence of
meaningful relationship in
life.
It causes people to feel
empty,alone & unwanted
resulting from inadequate
social relationship.
Lack of close friends & a
dearth of broader social
contact bring emotional
discomfort & distress .
CAUSES OF LONELINESS
 Failure to maintain friend
relationship.
 Lack of social skills
 Lack of interest in other
people
 Lack of empathy
 Lack of self confidence
 Failure to disclose
information about
themselves to potential
friends
 External locus of control
 Personality
characteristics like
shyness,anxiety,low self-
esteem,inherent
inferiority etc..
 Moving to new school or
neighbourhood;parental
seperation,experiencing
the death of a significant
person etc..
CONSEQUENCES OF LONELINESS
 Depression& suicide
 Cardiovascular disease & stroke
 Increased stress level
 Decreased memory & learning
 Antisocial behaviour
 Poor decision making
 Alcoholism & drug abuse
 The progression of Alzhemer's disease
 Altered brain function
 Antisocial & desturctive behaviour
DEALING WITH LONELINESS
 Provide personal guidance putting emphasis on understanding the cause of
problem, reversing the negative thoughts, feelings & attitudes resulting from the
problem.
 Assess the circumstances that lead to rejection & assist the child in changing
the situation.
 Provide them with necessary social skills needed to interact with their peers.
 Children who possess adequate social skills but are reluctant to use them can
be given opportunities for doing so by being paired with younger children.
 Some lonely children may get benefit by being given opportunities to express
their feelings of sadness or loneliness through manipulation, drawing,
movement,music, or creative activities.
