 2018 NEAT TRENDS
• Convenience Stores
+ 10 of 19 stores carried fresh fruits
– 3 of 19 stores carried fresh vegetables
• Farmers Market
+ All 5 markets offered fruits and vegetables at about the same price as local
grocery stores
– 3 of 5 markets did not participate in WIC or Nutrition Program for Seniors
• Food Pantry
+ 5 of 6 pantries had at least one partnership with a group to increase healthful
foods (CSAs, food banks, farmers markets, etc.)
– 5 of 6 pantries did not have nutrition standards for donated food items (4 of 6
pantries did not have standards for procured foods)
– Half of the pantries did not offer educational materials on healthy eating
 2018 NEAT TRENDS
• Grocery Stores
+ All 13 stores offered culturally appropriate food items
– All 13 stores priced lean beef and 100% juice as more expensive than less healthy
option
• Out-of-School Programs
+ 8 of 13 programs serve a fruit or vegetable at every meal or snack
+ 8 of 13 programs communicate with parents about healthful eating at least once a
year
– 9 of 13 programs did not have a policy regarding food brought in from outside of
program
• Restaurants
+ 25 of 27 restaurants offered a healthy substitution (50-50 at an extra charge and
without extra charge)
– No menu notation identifies and encourages healthy requests or options
– Most kids meal options were not healthy (fruit without sweeteners, non-fried
vegetable, lean poultry and whole-grain starch were not available)
