WHAT IS TWILIGHT?

♥ Twilight is a series of four vampire-based fantasy/romance novels

by author Stephenie Meyer.
♥ It follows the adventures of Isabella ("Bella") Swan, a teenager
who moves to Forks, Washington, and finds her life turned upside-
down when she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen.
♥ Twilight is the first in the series. The following books are New
Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.

♥ The author actually gain the idea of the novel from a dream she had: “I think
you only get one dream like that in a lifetime, and it was all I needed. Once I
unlocked the door, there were a lot of stories waiting to get out. Apparently,
there are enough people in my head to supply me for a while.”

♥ The author didn’t make a huge research about vampires just some details that
she needed so Bella could make her research but actually the author tried to
make her own world of vampires that broke the schema of vampires.

♥ This is the first book of the Twilight saga
♥ It introduces 17-year-old Bella, who moves from
Phoenix to Forks, and ends up falling in love with
a vampire.
♥ The apple on the cover represents the forbidden
fruit from the book of Genesis. It symbolizes Bella and
Edward's love, which is forbidden, like the fruit of
the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

♥ Stephenie Meyer : born December 24, 1973, Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.
Meyer, who was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, received a National Merit
Scholarship and attended Brigham Young University, where she
graduated with a bachelor’s degree (1997) in English literature. She
married in 1994 and worked as a homemaker, caring for her three sons.
After the publication of her first novel, Twilight, booksellers chose
Stephenie Meyer as one of the "most promising new authors of 2005"

 TWILIGHT MAIN CARACTERS

♥ Bella Swan is a perpetually clumsy "danger magnet". She is often

portrayed as having low self-esteem and not being able to grasp Edward's
love for her. Bella has dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. An
important trait of hers is her immunity to supernatural abilities that
involve the mind. She moves to Forks in order to live with her father after
her mother remarries, where she then meets the Cullens.
 TWILIGHT MAIN CARACTERS

♥ Edward Cullen is a vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans.

He is frozen in his 17-year-old body from when he died from the Spanish
influenza in 1918. Like some vampires, Edward has a supernatural ability; his
gift is mind reading, allowing him to read the thoughts of anyone within a
few miles of himself. Bella, however, is immune to his power.

♥ Cullen Family
• Carlisle Cullen: Edwards Father and Doctor.
• Esme Cullen: Edwards Mother.
• Rosalie Hale: is the adopted daughter of Esme and Carlisle.
• Emmett Cullen: is Rosalie's husband, Carlisle and Esme's adopted
son.
• Alice Cullen: is the adopted daughter of Carlisle and Esme,
adoptive sister of Edward, Rosalie, and Emmett, and wife of Jasper.
• Jasper Hale: is Alice's husband, Carlisle and Esme's adopted son.
 TWILIGHT OTHER CARACTERS

♥ James: The major antagonist of the novel, he’s "tracker" vampire who hunts
human beings or, in some cases, animals, for sport. Fellow coven member
Laurent says that James is unusually gifted at what he does and always gets
what he wants.

♥ Victoria: She’s a red-haired, cat-like vampire. She plays a small role in the first
book assisting James, her lover and coven leader, in hunting Bella Swan.

♥ Laurent: makes part of the group of vampires that are hunting in Forks.
 TWILIGHT OTHER CARACTERS

♥ Charlie Swan: Bella’s father and the police chief of Forks. He shares
Bella’s reticence and independence, and he loves to fish.

♥ Billy Black: Charlie’s good friend from La Push, the small Indian
reservation on the coast.

♥ Jacob Black: Billy Black’s son, age 14 or 15, who first tells Bella about
the legend of the Cullens. He is especially interested in cars. He also has a
crush on Bella.
 THE SETTING- FORKS

♥ The story of the Twilight saga is mainly set in the rainy town of Forks,
where Bella lives with her father, Charlie. The Cullen family resides just
outside of town. Forks is the rainiest place in all of the United States. It
rains there almost everyday of the year, with the exception of approximately
50 days. It is a neighbour of other towns such as Port Angeles and Olympia,
and is next to the Quileute Native reservation, La Push.
 THE SETTING- LA PUSH

♥ The story of the Twilight saga sometimes takes place in the nearby
Quileute Native reservation of La Push, next to the Quileute River. One of
the main attractions in La Push is the Ocean Park Resort of James Beach. It
is also known for good surfing and whaling conditions. Jacob Black lives
here with his family, as well as the entire werewolf pack.

♥ The vampires described throughout the Twilight saga are not your typical kind
of vampires.

♥ They are not harmed by garlic, wooden stakes, or silver. They have reflections
and are capable of coming out during the day. They do not have to breathe, but
typically find it uncomfortable to be without a sense of smell. All vampires
possess supernatural beauty, which allows them to lure in prey. Their skin is
flawless and has the texture and feel of marble; in direct sunlight, it sparkles.

♥ All vampires are described as having incredible superhuman strength, with

the ability to uproot trees, throw cars, and crush metal. Vampires have very keen
senses and are able to see and hear clearly for miles and move with such speed
that they become a blur to human eyes. They are immortal, and very difficult to
destroy, only permanently killed when dismembered and then burned, as their
body parts continue to move even after being detached. Vampires are not able to
sleep, and thus are always awake. After the transformation from human to
vampire, a certain ability is enhanced, sometimes resulting in a special ability.

♥ Twilight tells the story of Bella Swan and the vampire she falls in love
with, Edward Cullen. Bella moves to the small and rainy town of Forks,
Washington, to live with her father after her mother remarries. She hates the rain,
but at least she fits in better in Forks than she did in her huge high school in
Phoenix, Arizona.
♥ On her first day of school she sees Edward Cullen, one of a group of five
students, all of whom seem inhumanely beautiful and aloof toward the rest of the
school. Bella is hypnotized by Edward’s good looks, but for some reason, his first
response to her is incredibly negative. He slowly begins to become less hostile,
although he warns her that it would be better for her to stay away.

♥ One day, when Bella is almost crushed by an out of control minivan, he saves
her life. She cannot quite understand how he did it, though. Right before the
crash, she saw him across the parking lot from her.
♥ When some of the students take a trip to the beach, Bella meets Jacob Black,
the son of her father’s good friend Billy Black and a member of the La Push
reservation. She gets Jacob to explain why the Cullens won’t come to La
Push, and he tells her it is because of some old legends that his people have
that the Cullens are vampires, and while they do not feed on humans, they are
still not welcome on the reservation.

♥ Bella suspects that this may actually be true. When she confronts Edward about it, he tells her
the truth. He explains that this is why she should stay away from him-even though he chooses
not to hunt humans, he is especially drawn by her smell and may not be able to resist her. She
cannot stay away, though, because she has fallen in love with him. Likewise, he is too much in
love to push her away, even for her own good.
♥ He takes her to watch while he and his family play vampire baseball, and while they are there,
another, more violent vampire coven comes by. The leader, a very old, very lethal vampire
named James, catches Bella’s scent, and when Edward defends her, he sees a chance to engage
in a challenging hunt. Edward knows, because he can read minds, that James won’t give up
until he has killed her.

 Bella and all of the Cullens come up with a plan to try to get her to safety while
also protecting her family, taking her to Phoenix, but James is clever and manages to
trick Bella into coming to see him alone .There he almost kills her, but the other
vampires arrive in time, and Edward saves her. He has bitten her, though, and
Edward must use all of his self-control to suck just enough of her blood to get the
vampire venom out without killing her. He succeeds.
 Bella heals and goes back to Forks, where Edward surprises her by taking her to
the prom. She tells him that she wants him to change her into a vampire too so that
she can be with him forever, but he is staunchly against it, not wanting to take her life
from her while she still has another choice.
 WHY DO I LIKE TWILIGHT?

♥ Twilight is a good book because it has lots of detail in each chapter, it allows
me to visualize what is happening in the book. It introduces the main characters
fast in the first couple chapters, for me a good book has action, mystery, and
some romance. Twilight has lots of plot twists which will make you want to keep
reading. I think it is full of imagination and excitement

♥ I loved the Twilight book from the minute I picked the book up. There was
so much tension all the way through from beginning to end. Also they were the
biggest books I had ever read.
