NORMAL

DISTRIBUTION

SHAPE OF STANDARD
NORMAL
DISTRIBUTION
➢It is a bell shaped
curve.
➢Its shape is like a bell
in which a peak is
exactly in the centre
of the curve.
➢The mean of standard normal distribution
is always 0.
➢The standard deviation is always 1.
STANDARD NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
All normal distributions can be converted into the standard
normal curve by subtracting the mean and dividing by the
standard deviation:

Where X is any raw score, µ is mean and σ is the standard

deviation of the distribution of the scores.
Properties of
Normal Distribution
Here are some properties:
●The mean, mode and median are all equal .

●The curve is symmetrical about mean.

●The area under curve is 1.

●It is completely determined by mean and standard

variance.
TRAPEZOIDAL RULE

➢ Method of numerical integration used to find

approximate value of integral.
➢ Can be used to integrate(find the area) the standard
normal distribution curve
➢ The area under the curve gives the probability.
➢ Formula to integrate using trapezoidal rule
AIM :--- TO FIND THE PROBABILITY OF INDIAN MEN HAVING HEIGHTS
BETWEEN 58 TO 68 INCHES USING TRAPEZOIDAL RULE

Given a normal distribution curve with mean(μ)= 65.6 and standard

deviation(σ)=6.1025.
For the sake of simplicity we convert the normal distribution curve into standard
normal distribution curve.
STANDARD NORMAL DISTRIBUTION CURVE :-- It is a normal distribution curve
with μ=0 and σ=1 where for every value of X we have a corresponding value of Z.

Z = (X - μ)/ σ
After referring to Z score table
Z(-1.2454) = |-0.3944| (since area cannot be negative)
Z(0.39328) = 0.1517

Probability = 0.3944 + 0.1517 = 0.5461

Error = |ACTUAL VALUE - APPROXIMATE VALUE|

Error = |0.5461 - 0.4530|
Error = 0.0931

Conclusion :- We observe that the difference error between the approximated

value and the actual value is not very high so trapezoidal method can be used
as a measure to find the probability from a standard normal distribution
curve.
Simpson’s Rule for Standard
Normal Distribution
. Also the Simpson's rule is more accurate than
trapezoidal rule because it’s error is less than trapezoidal.
