Assumptions for HSDPA Data Rates
• UMTS channel bandwidth = 5MHz, bandwidth occupied by
3.84Mcps
• HSDPA has 16 codes, 3.84Mcps/16 = 240kbps (including coding)
Remove coding overhead (turbo)and raw data rate per bearer =
240kbps
• Change from QPSK to 16QAM and raw data rate per bearer =
960kps
– 1 SF code = 960kbps peak bearer rate
– 4 SF codes = 3.84Mbps peak bearer rate
– 8 SF codes = 7.68Mbps peak bearer rate
– 15 SF codes = 14.4Mbps peak bearer rate

NB : Multiple users can be accommodated by a single bearer.

If a single user requires the peak bearer rate, only that user can be accommodated.

wireless networks
• Characteristics of latency sensitive applications
– Many requests/responses per transaction
– Small packet size
– Lots of control messages back and forth (chatty)
– High protocol overhead
– Lots of time-sensitive transactions

UMTS response times 3x faster than 2.5G (GPRS)

All-IP target architecture
• Target 3G network architecture, as described in specifications, is a single unified network
that is 100% all-IP. The evolution to IP-based network has three outstanding merits:
– an IP-based network promises lower communication charge and reduced system building cost.
IP system equipment used to support both the voice communication service and packet
communication service promises to cost much less to introduce than conventional, special
purpose equipment,
– it makes it easier to develop applications integrating voice and data communication. If the move
to IP is carried out end-to-end, then Internet Service Providers will be less dependent on cellular
operators, and will be able to develop applications more freely,
– since it is possible to handle both voice and data on a single all-IP core network running costs
can be cut substantially.
• However, implementation of IP, especially in Radio Access Network can bring some
initial problems. Because IP by itself will not meet some requirements for QoS, mobility
and bandwidth efficiency in the last-mile narrowband link, new protocols must be added.
Using any kind of adaptation technique — header compression, MPLS, or PPP
extensions — to augment IP in narrowband links results in a high level of complexity. To
cope with this some vendors suggest broadband or distributed architecture schemes.
• As it has been already mentioned, main assets of IP technology are: flexibility, scalability,
and cost-effectiveness. Some problems that appeared (QoS, mobility and bandwidth
efficiency) are still being resolved. The standardization process of using IP in UMTS is in
progress, and will be finalized in Release 5 of 3GPP standards

More Details on Lucent Leadership

Proprietary information - Lucent Technologies

Leadership in Spread Spectrum Technology
• Lucent Technologies can assure Cingular Wireless of a cost effective and
high performing network and can offer confidence to Cingular Wireless in
implementing this radically different radio technology.
• Lucent Technologies has field-proven and market dominant solutions in the
CDMA market with the mature, performance leading and stable spread
spectrum products (common platform across CDMA and UMTS).
• In addition, Lucent Technologies offers the assurance of an intricate and
time-built knowledge base of the inner workings of commercial spread
spectrum systems.
• Proprietary tools such as a noise simulator tool (OCNS) are built into our
infrastructure products, and will be particularly beneficial to Cingular
Wireless in evaluating the performance of UMTS during the trial phase, by
providing an accurate picture of the performance to be achieved in
commercial operation.
• Lucent Technologies’ OCELOT RF optimization tool enables optimal system
performance, and minimizes time consuming and expensive drive testing
during the deployment and optimization phases.

1 UMTS Intro (22july04).ppt Proprietary information - Lucent Technologies 35

Leading the Way with HSDPA
• Lucent’s HSDPA market leadership originates from the development of key ideas and
a framework developed during an in-house study called SPARCS (Synergistic Power
and Rate Controlled Systems), in which Lucent Technologies owns significant IPR (30
patents).
• This work was initiated in mid-2000, as a series of enhancements to the in-place 3G
standards (cdma2000-1xRTT, & UTRAN R99/R4), with a focus on developing a voice
and data system that could simultaneously maximize capacity and throughput
(optimizing spectral efficiency).
• SPARCS was the fundamental basis for the 1xEV-DV and HSDPA standards. Lucent
Technologies proposed SPARCS concepts to 3GPP during the fall of 2000, which
initiated the HSDPA work item that resulted in the HSDPA feature defined in 3GPP R5,
with the standards being completed in December 2002.
• By leveraging its 1xEV-DO experience in designing and developing HSDPA, Lucent
Technologies’ HSDPA solution supports data and voice in the same band in a very
spectrally efficient manner through dynamic sharing and rigid assignment of power,
code space, time and bandwidth. The bottom line is that HSDPA is capable of the
highest per user peak throughputs of any technology and average aggregate
throughputs on par with 1xEV-DO/DV.
• In addition, Lucent Technologies is actively supporting and driving standards and
product development for the incorporation of EUDCH. EUDCH provides high data
rates and improved performance for the uplink, and is currently targeted for 3GPP R6.
