1. Identify the input speed of the pinion, the desired output
speed of the gear, and the power to be transmitted.
2. Choose the type of material for the gears (Table 14.5, Fig.
14.24-14.25).
3. Specify a trial value of diametral pitch/module (Fig. 14.8).

4. Specify the face width within the following recommended


range. 8/pd < bw <16/pd
Nominal value of bw = 12/pd

5. Compute or specify Wt, Yj, Ka, Ks, Km, Kv, Ki, and Kb required
for equations 14.58 and 14.74.
6. Compute the bending stress (Eqn. 14.58) and the contact
stress (Eqn. 14.71-14.74), on the pinion and gear teeth.
Judge whether the stresses are reasonable (neither too low
nor too high) in terms of being able to specify a suitable
material.

7. If not select a new pitch or revise the number of teeth, pitch


diameter, or face width. Typically the contact stress on the
pinion is the limiting value for gears designed for a long life.

8. Iterate the design process to seek more optimum designs.
