COMPUTER SECURITY
DATA SECURITY
WHAT IS COMPUTER
SECURITY?
 This refers to the protection of
hardware and software
resources against their
accidental or deliberate
damage, theft, or corruption (in
the case of software).
WHAT IS DATA
SECURITY?
 Data security is the protection of
data against intentional or
accidental damage.

DELIBERATE DAMAGE

 Theft of Hardware:

 Hackers:

 Terrorist Activities:

 Industrial Espionage:
ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE

 Natural Disasters:

 Electrical Power Surges and

spikes:
Common approaches to
security includes:
 Closed-circuit TV monitors
 Electronic alarm systems
 Computer-controlled locks that
check employee badges
 Biometric recognition, such as
fingerprints, retina, scans and
voice
 Access codes.
GADGETS THAT PROTECT
COMPTUER PERIPHERALS
 Secure Lid Locks:
 This prevents PC’s
or server’s
processor chips,
memory chips and
boards from being
stolen. It works by
converting up one
of the CPU’s lid
screw so that only
authorized persons
can access inside.

 Cable Straps:
 This prevent the
theft of your
mouse, hand held
scanners,
speakers,
microphone and
any other device
that is connected
to your computer
using cables.

 This gadget
prevents the
thefts of
notebooks and
laptps.
GADGETS THAT PROTECT

 Universal Lock
Down:
 Will secure
equipments
such as
monitors,
system units,
printers,
copiers, phone
system and
more.
GADGETS THAT PROTECT
COMPTUER PERIPHERALS
 Alarm System:
 The alarm
system gives an
ear piercing
sound when the
item being
protected is
moved or
tampered.
GADGETS THAT PROTECT
COMPTUER PERIPHERALS
 Dust Covers:
 Covering the
computer to
protect it from
elements
(water, sun,
dust).
GADGETS THAT PROTECT
COMPTUER PERIPHERALS
 Surge Protector/
Suppressors:

 The main job of

a surge
protector
system is to
protect
electronic devic
es
from "surges."
WHAT ARE POWER
SURGES?
 A power surge, or transient
voltage, is an increase in
voltage significantly above the
designated level in a flow of
electricity.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
SURGE AND SPIKES:
 When the increase lasts three
nanoseconds (billionths of a
second) or more, it's called a
surge.
 When it only lasts for one or two
nanoseconds, it's called a
spike.
SURGE PROTECTION

 A simple MOV
surge
protector with
line
conditioning
and a fuse
WHEN TO USE A SURGE
PROTECTOR:
 There's no reason to hook up a light bulb to a surge
protector because the worst that is likely to happen due to
a power surge is that your light bulb will burn out.

 You should definitely use a surge protector with your

computer. It is filled with voltage-sensitive components
that a power surge could damage very easily. At the least,
this damage will shorten the life of your computer, and it
could very easily wipe out all of your saved data or
destroy your system. Computers are very expensive
items, and the data they hold is often irreplaceable, so it's
only good economic sense to invest in a quality surge
protector.

 It's a good idea to use surge protectors for other high-end

electronic equipment, such as entertainment center
components. A surge protector will generally extend the
life of these devices, and there's always a chance that a
big power surge will causes severe damage.
PROBLEM WITH SURGE
PROTECTOR:
 One problem with
surge protectors is
that the MOVs can
burn out with one
good surge. This is
why it's good to get
a protector with an
indicator light
that tells you
whether or not it's
functioning
properly.
GADGETS THAT PROTECT
COMPTUER PERIPHERALS
 Uninterruptible Power Supply
(UPS).
 This contains surge
suppressors circuits, as well
as batteries that provide
electrical power during a
temporary or permanent
power lost.
A UPS generally protects a
computer against four different
power problems:
 Voltage surges and spikes - Times when
the voltage on the line is greater than it
should be
 Voltage sags - Times when the voltage on
the line is less than it should be
 Total power failure - Times when a line
goes down or a fuse blows somewhere on
the grid or in the building
 Frequency differences - Times when the
power is oscillating at something other than
60 Hertz
There are two common
systems in use today:

 Standby UPS

 Continuous UPS
GADGETS THAT PROTECT
COMPTUER PERIPHERALS
 Voltage regulators are components that
maintain a consistent voltage output.
Electronic components are often made to
accept only a low maximum voltage, and
can be badly damaged by a power surge.
Likewise, a low voltage can fail to provide
enough power for the component. Voltage
regulators are often responsible for
maintaining a voltage within the range that
the electronic component can safely
accept.
