RENEWABLE ENERGY

GROUP 5
WIND ENERGY

• The best places for wind

farms are in coastal areas,
at the tops of rounded hills,
open plains and gaps in
mountains - places where
the wind is strong and
reliable. Some are offshore.

TOP WIND ENERGY PRODUCING COUNTRY
• World wind power generation capacity has
reached 435 GW at the end of 2015, around 7%
of total global power generation capacity. Global
wind power generation amounted to 950 TWh in
2015, nearly 4% of total global power generation.
• China has the largest wind energy installed
capacity with 145 GW, followed by the United
States with 73 GW, Germany 45 GW, India 25
GW, Spain 23 GW and the UK 14 GW.

WIND FARMS IN THE PHILIPPINES
• Philippinesnow has an operational wind
energy capacity of 400 MW, more than
anything other country in the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region,
according to media reports quoting former
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, who played an
important role in the passage of Renewable
Energy Law of 2008.

BURGOS WIND POWER PROJECT
• The 150 MW Burgos wind farm in
Ilocos Norte is the biggest wind farm
in the Philippines and the first wind
project nominated for the Philippine
Government’s feed-in-tariff (FIT)
incentive scheme.
• The onshore wind farm was
commissioned in November 2014 and
is owned and operated by the EDC
Burgos Wind Power Corporation
(EBWPC), an affiliate of Energy
Development Corporation (EDC).
SOLAR ENERGY

• In order to generate a
substantial amount of
energy, we have to place
photovoltaic panels or install
solar thermal plants in areas
where sunshine is ample.
Here are some of the best and the most
suited places to harness solar energy.

• Deserts
• Mountains
• Rooftops
• Highways
• Global installed capacity for solar-powered
electricity has seen an exponential growth,
reaching around 227 GWe at the end of 2015.
It produced 1% of all electricity used globally.

• Germany has led PV capacity installations

over last decade and continues as a leader
followed by China, Japan, Italy and the United
States. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)
remains with very limited capacity at 4 GW
today.

BIOMASS ENERGY

• Biomass can be produced

from agricultural, forestry
and municipal wastes and
residues, as well as from
crops such as sugar, grain,
and vegetable oil
• Currently, the major use of biomass is in the form
of heat in rural and developing countries. About
90% of all the bioenergy consumption is in the
traditional use.
• The primary energy supply of forest biomass
used worldwide is estimated at about 56 EJ,
which means woody biomass is the source of
over 10% of all energy supplied annually. Overall,
woody biomass provides about 90% of the
primary energy annually sourced from all forms
of biomass

BIOMASS ENERGY IN THE PHILIPPINES
• Biomass energy has, and continues to play a
vital role in the Philippines’ energy
supply. Nearly 30 percent of the energy for
the 100 million plus people living in the
Philippines comes from biomass, and is
mainly used for household cooking by the
rural population.
San Carlos BioPower
San Carlos BioPower

• San Carlos BioPower will be a greenfield,

stand alone power plant with a generation
capacity of 19.99MW supplying base load
power to the local grid. The plant will be
located on the island of Negros in the
Philippines, a prime agricultural area in the
region.
HYDROELECTRIC POWER
• Flowing water creates energy that
can be captured and turned into
electricity. This is called
hydroelectric power or
hydropower. The most common
type of hydroelectric power plant
uses a dam on a river to store
water in a reservoir.
THREE GORGES DAM
THREE GORGES DAM
• The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric
gravity dam that spans the Yangtze River by
the town of Sandouping, in Yiling District,
Yichang, Hubei province, China. The Three
Gorges Dam is the world's largest power
station in terms of installed capacity (22,500
MW).
What is a good place to put a hydroelectric power
station?
• To start I would consider the following factors:
• Water flow characteristics
• Soil stability
• Achievable head height
• Reservoir potential by damming
• Distance to grid access point of comparable base load demand
• Available highways to support building and operation of the plant.
• Electric power tariffs.
• Environmental impact
Factors Affecting the Selection of Site
for Dams

•Good topographical location along

the path of river
•Right geological structure
•Sufficient water is available
Hydropower in the Philippines
• Given the country's vast hydropower potential, more
than 10 percent of electricity requirements will be
supplied by hydropower generation. To meet the
expected increase in demand for power over the
planning period, a total of 2,950 MW of hydropower
capacity will be available within both grid and off-grid
areas. Committed and indicative capacity additions will
increase overall hydropower available capacity to 5,468
MW from the current installed capacity of 2,518 MW.
What is
Geothermal
Energy?
• Utilize temperature of
the earth’s core.
• Direct use: District
Heating System
• Electricity generation
• Heat pumps
Locations
• Ring of Fire
• Over 20 countries:
Iceland, U.S., Italy,
France, China,
Japan, etc.
• The United States
is the country with
the greatest
geothermal
energy production
How is Geothermal Energy Generated?

• Temperatures hotter than the sun’s surface are continuously

produced inside the earth by a slow decay of radioactive particles

• The most common method that scientists use to find geothermal

reservoirs is drilling a deep well and testing the temperature deep
underground.

• Steam or very hot water from deep within the earth is piped to
the surface and used as a heat source or to produce electricity.
Uses and Goals

• Heat pumps – heat and cool building; melt snow from

roads and sidewalks
• Direct use applications – greenhouses, heat water for fish
farming, pasteurize milk, food dehydration, gold mining
• Power plants – produce electricity
• Help mitigate global warming
Geothermal Energy

• Almost no negative impact on the

environment.
• Release about 1 to 3 percent of the
carbon dioxide emissions of a fossil fuel
plant.
