Expert System

• also called "knowledge-based system"

• an artificial intelligence system that applies
reasoning capabilities to reach a conclusion
• excellent in diagnostic and prescriptive
problems
• Diagnostic - "what's wrong?"
• Prescriptive - "what to do?"
• usually built for a specific application area called
"domain"
An expert system can:
√ Reduce errors
√ Improve customer service
√ Reduce costs

But it can't:
√ Use common sense
√ Automate all processes
Neural Networks
• often called "artificial neural network" (ANN)
• an artificial intelligence capable of finding and
differentiating patterns
• widely used for visual pattern and speech
recognition systems
• most useful for identification, classification,
and prediction when a vast amount of
information is available
Neural networks can:
• Learn and adjust to new circumstances on
their own
• Take part in massive parallel processing
• Function without complete information
• Cope with huge volumes of information
• Analyze nonlinear relationships
Fuzzy Logic
• a mathematical method of handling imprecise
and subjective information
• "Fuzzy logic algorithm" set of steps that relative
variables inexact information or personal
perceptions
• Applications:
• Google's search engine
• Washing machines
• Antilock breaks
