A verb is a
word the
expresses an
action, or a
state of
being.
Kinds of Verbs
1. ACTION VERBS
These are words used to tell what kind of
action a person or thing is making. They may be
physical or mental actions.
Examples:
The plane landed at the airport a while ago.
(physical action)
Mother always hopes for the best. (mental action)
Identify the Action Verb

• Anthony is throwing the football.


• She accepted the job offer.
• He thought about his stupid mistake in
the test.
• John visited his friend for a while and
then went home.
• The dog ran across the yard.
• She left in a hurry.
• She yelled when she hit her toe.
2. TRANSITIVE VERBS
 Requires an object to complete its
meaning

Example:
My sister broke the window.
Examples of Transitive Verbs with
their objects:

• I sold some books.


• I took the bus.
• I bought a radio.
• I understood her
question.
• I wrote a letter.
3. INTRANSITIVE VERBS

 It’s complete by itself and does not


require an object to complete its
meaning.

Example:
Father cried.
Examples of Intransitive Verbs:

• I slept.
• I coughed.
• The glass fell.
• My cat ran.
• The sun rose.
Decide whether the verbs in bold are
transitive or intransitive

• She was crying all day long. Intransitive


• We showed her the photo album. Transitive
• The doctor advised me to exercise
regularly. Transitive
• It was raining at that time. Intransitive
• She laughed at the joke. Intransitive
