Scanning
Very high-speed reading
When you scan, you have
questions in mind. You don’t need
to read every word, only words
that answer your questions.
Benefit: you skip over unimportant
words so that you can read faster.
SCANNING

State the specific information you are looking for

Anticipate how the answer will appear & what clues


you might use --> to help you locate the answer
• For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would
quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers

Selectively read and skip through sections of the


passage
SKIMMING
• the process of reading --> only main ideas within a passage --> to get
an overall impression of the content of a reading selection.

• The main idea usually is located in the first sentence
