SUSTAINABLE FASHION

By: Vieru Cristina

Definition

 Sustainable fashion, or eco fashion, is a part of the design

philosophy. Sustainability is about trying to
balance different needs against an awareness
of the environmental and the
social issues we face as a society.
 Sustainability to me, means ensuring that we
don't impoverish the planet. In practice, this
implies continuous work to improve all stages of
the product’s life cycle, from design, raw
material, production, manufacturing, transport,
storage,marketing and final sale.
Genesis
 Sustainable fashion came into the public in the late ‘80s . The fashion industry’s growing
focus on sustainable practices has even prompted publications such as Forbes to hail
“Green is the New Black.”
 In 1973 the U.S. and other countries signed an agreement that set up a system to limit the
amount of textile and apparel imports from specific countries.

 Companies such as Patagonia and ESPRIT brought "sustainability" into their businesses and
commissioned research into the impacts of fibers. Companies co-funded the first organic
cotton conference held in 1991 in Visalia, California.

In 1991 Nike came under fire for the low wages and poor working conditions at one of its
Indonesian factories; consumer protests, boycotts and media attention, drove the
company to make some serious changes.
Importance
 The fashion industry is the second most harmful to the environment, right after oil
industry, also we must consider that many synthetics contain petroleum.More importantly,
it is a step towards the eradication of unethical labour policies and exploitation in factories
around the world.
 The devastating impact of toxic chemical use in agriculture, for growing cotton includes
the death of a US cotton farmer from a brain tumour, and serious birth defects in Indian
cotton farmers’ children.

 When polyester garments are washed in domestic washing machines, they shed
microfibres that add to the increasing levels of plastic in our oceans.Clothes contribute to
resource pollution , due to the fact that most of these items will one day be thrown out.
Materials
Cotton is the most common natural fabric used in fashion.

Fibers manufactured from natural materials include: Lyocell

and polylactic acid (PLA).

Recycled fibers made from scraps of fabrics from clothing

factories.

Upcycled fibers made from materials that are’nt originally used

to make fibers, or trash from origin.

Corkshell - made with a by-product from wine cork production.

QMilch – made from milk(protein)that can no longer be sold.
