Touch Systems

 A touch screen is an electronic visual display that can detect the

presence and location of a touch within the display area. The term
generally refers to touching the display of the device with a finger or
hand.

 Touchscreens can also sense other passive objects, such as a stylus.

Touchscreens are common in devices such as game consoles, all-in-
one computers, tablet computers, and smartphones.
 Such displays can be attached to computers, or to networks as
terminals. They also play a prominent role in the design of digital
appliances such as the personal digital assistant (PDA), satellite
navigation devices, mobile phones, and video games.

 The touchscreen has two main attributes :

o First, it enables one to interact directly with what is displayed, rather than
indirectly with a pointer controlled by a mouse or touchpad.
o Secondly, it lets one do so without requiring any intermediate device that would
need to be held in the hand (other than an nm stylus, which is optional for most
modern touchscreens).
Types of Touch Technologies
o Capacitive touch systems

o Resistive touch systems

o Surface acoustic wave touch systems

o Infrared touch systems

Capacitive Touch Screen
• Capacitive touchscreens work by sensing the conductive
properties of an object, usually the skin on your fingertip. A
capacitive screen on a mobile phone or smartphone usually
has a glass face and doesn't rely on pressure.

• This makes it more responsive than a resistive screen when it

comes to gestures such as swiping and pinching.

• Capacitive touchscreens can only be touched with a finger,

and will not respond to touches with a regular stylus, gloves
or most other objects.
 A capacitive touch screen panel consists of an insulator such as glass,
coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO).

 As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the

screen results in a distortion of the body's electrostatic field,
measurable as a change in capacitance.
Advantages of Capacitive Systems

 Scratch resistant, durable surface

 High endurance (225 million touches)

 Very accurate

 Good optical clarity

 Liquids won't affect touch screen performance

Disadvantages of Capacitive Systems

 Because the technology is dependent on the conductive nature of

human body, it doesn’t work if the user is wearing gloves.

 Because of having a complex structure, these are quite expensive.

 Glass is more prone to breaking.

Resistive Touch Screen

 A resistive touch screen panel is composed of several

layers, the most important of which are two thin,
metallic, electrically conductive layers separated by a
narrow gap.

 When an object, such as a finger, presses down on a point

on the panel's outer surface the two metallic layers
become connected at that point. This causes a change in
the electrical current, which is registered as a touch
event and sent to the controller for processing.
 The Resistive Touch Screen panels are widely used in Grocery Stores,
Hotels, Restaurants and Retail Stores.
• When the screen is pressed, the outer later is pushed onto the
next layer — the technology senses that pressure is being
applied and registers input.

• Resistive touchscreens are versatile as they can be operated

with a finger, a fingernail, a stylus or any other object

• Examples of current smartphones with resistive

touchscreens include:
o LG Optimus
o LG GW620
o Sony Ericsson Vivaz
o Nokia N97 mini
o Nokia N900
Advantages of Resistive Touchscreen

 Low production cost

 High resistance to dust and water

 Best used with a finger, gloved hand or stylus

 Best suited for handwriting recognition

Disadvantages of Resistive Touchscreen

 Not too sensitive, you have to press down harder

 Poor contrast because of having additional reflections from extra layer

of material placed over the screen

 Does not support multi-touch

Conclusion
 Though the touch screen technology contains some limitations it’s very
user friendly, fast, accurate, easy for the novices & fun to operate.

 It has been widely accepted. And now by just modifying a little it can
replace the mouse and key board completely in near future.
