The Great Wall of China was built between the Zhou Dynasty in 1045 BC and the Ming Dynasty in 1644 to defend against invaders from the north. It stretches over 6,000 kilometers but parts further west have deteriorated more than sections near Beijing that are better preserved. The two main sections today are the Simatai Section and Badaling Section, both built during the Ming Dynasty in the Beijing area.
