QUESTION TO BE COVERED

Q. no. Question

83 List various application of geothermal

energy conversion systems.
84 List out and explain, different operational
and environmental problems associated
with the use of geothermal energy.
CONTENTS
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
 The word geothermal comes from the Greek
words geo (earth) and therme (heat). So,
geothermal energy is heat from within the earth.
We can use the steam and hot water produced
inside the earth to heat buildings or generate
electricity. Geothermal energy is a renewable
energy source because the water is replenished
by rainfall and the heat is continuously produced
inside the earth.
VARIATION OF TEMPERATURE WITH DEPTH
APPLICATION OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
 There are three mail application of the steam and
hot water from the wet geothermal reservoirs:-
1. Generation of electricity power.
2. Industrial process heating
3. Space heating for various kinds of buildings.
GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY POWER.
 Geothermal power is power generated by
geothermal energy.
 Technologies in use include

1. Dry steam power stations,

2. Flash steam power stations

3. Binary cycle power stations.

Geothermal electricity generation is currently used

in 24 countries
while geothermal heating is in use in 70 countries.
OPERATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL
PROBLEM
 Geothermal process is not altogether a very clean
process unless certain precautions are taken;
otherwise there may be pollution and relative effects.
 Fortunately all these precaution can be taken easily
and without spending large amount of money.
1. Solid particles and non condensable gases.
2. Re-injection.
3. Land-Erosion
4. Noise
5. Water-borne poisons.
6. Air-borne poisons.
