CHAPTER 1 WELDING INSPECTION
1.1 Specific Duties of a Welding Inspector

- The main duty of a welding inspector is to ensure that all

the welding and associated actions are carried out in accordance
with the welding specification(s) relevant to the contract or work
being carried out.

CHAPTER 1 WELDING INSPECTION
1.2 Duties Prior to Welding
No. Duties API 1104 REF:
1. Obtain all the relevant information or ensure Sect 5.3 & 6.2
access to it
a) Relevant specification(s)
b) Relevant procedures, wps, repair, ndt, etc.
c) Copies of welder’s test certificate (where
applicable)
d) Copies of drawing (where applicable)
2. Ensure welder qualification Sect 6.2
3. Correct material – type, condition, size (pipe, plate, Sect 4.2.1
etc)
4. Correct consumables – type, condition, size, (filler Sect 4.2.2
material, gas, inserts, etc.)
5. Correct equipment – certified where necessary Sect 4.4.1

No. Duties API 1104 REF:
1. Check Amperage(A),Voltage(V),and Polarity. Sect 5.4

2. Ensure welding technique. Sect 5.3

3. Check welding time – time lapses and/or Sect 5.4.2.8
run out length (r.o.l’s).
4. Ensure adequate cleaning between passes. Sect 7.7
5. Correct interpass temperature – minimum Sect 7.11

1.4Duties After Welding

No. Duties After Welding API 1104 REF:
1. Ensure allowable cap repairs are carried out whilst Sect 10.2
weld is still hot.
2. Ensure joint is covered with heat-resistant Sect 7.11
3. Ensure weld is post cleaned Sect 7.7
4. Visual inspection of weld for defects, eg; cracks, Sect 9.3
incomplete filled groove, lack of penetration, lack
of fusion, arc strikes, etc.

9. Supervise and monitor any repairs in accordance Sect 9
with repair wps.
10. Documentation Document A6

CHAPTER 1 WELDING INSPECTION

1.5 Welding Inspector’s Equipment

- The welding inspector’s equipment partly depends on which

work is to be performed. Client specification also determines what
equipment is to be used; e.g. a portable arc monitoring unit (PAM
unit) may be used to measure and record amperage and voltage
instead of a hand held voltmeter and ammeter.

a) Steel Rule.
b) Flexible tape measure.
c) Temperature Indicating crayons or thermocouple (pyrometer).
d) Bevel angle gauges.
e) Root gap gauges.
f) Fillet weld gauges.
g) Misalignment gauge.
