1. Catalino Lino Brocka


April 3, 1939 – May 22, 1991
He was a Filipino film director. He is widely regarded as
one of the most influential and significant Filipino
filmmakers in the history of Philippine cinema.
“Maynila, Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag” - This is a story of a
provincial man’s stay in the city of Manila, the changes he
had to cope with, and his discovery that his childhood
sweetheart, brought to Manila sometime ago for schooling,
was deceived and sold to a Chinese brothel owner instead
- At the 1976 FAMAS Awards, it won Best Picture, Best
Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best
Supporting Actor.
To name a few, Brocka’s films include the
following: “Santiago” (1970), “Wanted:
Perfect Mother” (1970), “Tubog sa Ginto”
(1971), “Stardoom” (1971), “Tinimbang Ka
Ngunit Kulang” (1974), “Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko
ng Liwanag” (1975), “Insiang” (1976),
“Jaguar” (1979), “Bona” (1980), “Macho
Dancer” (1989), “Orapronobis” (1989),
“Makiusap Ka sa Diyos” (1991).
2. DAISY AVELLANA
(January 26, 1917 – May 12, 2013)

Daisy Avellana was a Filipina stage actress


and theater director. Avellana was honored
as a National Artist of the Philippines for
Theater and Film in 1999. Avellana was
born Daisy Hontiveros on January 26, 1917,
in Capiz, Capiz.
She elevated legitimate theater and dramatic arts to
a new level of excellence by staging and performing
in breakthrough productions of classic Filipino and
foreign plays.
Together with her husband, National Artist Lamberto
Avellana and other artists, she co-founded the
Barangay Theatre Guild in 1939 which paved the way
for the popularization of theatre and dramatic arts in
the country, utilizing radio and television.
She starred in plays like Othello (1953), Macbeth in
Black (1959), Casa de Bernarda Alba (1967), Tatarin.
She is best remembered for her portrayal of Candida
Marasigan in the stage and film versions of Nick
Joaquin’s Portrait of the Artist as Filipino. Her
directorial credits include Diego Silang (1968),
and Walang Sugat (1971). Among her screenplays
were Sakay (1939) and Portrait of the Artist as
Filipino (1955).
3. Honorata de la Rama-Hernandez,
(January 11, 1905- July 11, 1991)
She was commonly known as “Atang” de la
Rama, was a singer and bodabil performer
who became the first Filipina film actress.
Atang de la Rama was born in Tondo, Manila
on January 11, 1905.

4.FERNANDO POE, JR.
(Ronald Allan Kelley Poe)
(August 20, 1939 – Dec. 14, 2004)

He was better known as Fernando Poe Jr. and


colloquially known as FPJ and Da King, was
a Filipino actor. During the latter part of his career, Poe
was defeated by then President Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo in the 2004 Philippine presidential elections. His
long career as an action film star earned him the
nickname "King of Philippine Movies" (often shortened
to Da King).
Poe was posthumously declared a National Artist of the
Philippines for Film on May 23, 2006 by President
Macapagal-Arroyo. The award was confirmed by
President Benigno Aquino III on July 20, 2012, and was
presented to his family on August 16.
Poe won the most best actor awards at
the FAMAS. Among the movies that received
awards were Mga Alabok ng
Lupa (1967), Asedillo (1971), Durugin si Totoy
Bato, Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko (1983),
and Muslim Magnum .357 (1987).
Among his roles were Flavio in
the mythical Ang Panday series, Kahit Konting
Pagtingin, Dito sa Pitong Gatang and Aguila.
His last movie was ”Pakners” which also
stars 9-ball billiards champion Efren "Bata"

5. ISHMAEL BERNAL
(30 September 1938 – 2 June 1996)
He was a Filipino film, stage and television director,
actor and screenwriter. Noted for his melodramas,
particularly with feminist and moral issues.

He directed many landmark Filipino films such


as Nunal sa Tubig (1975), City After
Dark (1980), Relasyon (1982), Himala (1982),
and Hinugot sa Langit (1985).
He was declared a National Artist of the Philippines in
2001.
He was awarded as CMMA Best Director
Award in 1983.

6. Peque Gallaga –
He was known as “Experiemental Cinema of
the Philippines.” He was born in Manila and
studied in Bacolod City
He directed the “Oro, Plata, Mata” and the
famous “Shake, Rattle and Roll” 1,2,3,4.

• 7. Celso Ad Castillo – He directed “Ang
Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa”
• Gloria Diaz played the role of Isabel who
appeared one day in small town and changed
the lives of families because of human desire
for passion. Unfortunately , Isabel was the
object of passion and became the cause of
jealousy, envy, hatred and insanity.

• 8. Marilou Diaz Abaya – multi awarded


film directors and the founder of the Marilou
Diaz Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center - a
film school based in Antipolo City.
• Film “Muro Ami” - depict on the worst form
of child labor in the illegal fishing in the
Philippines.

• 1. Raymond Red is one of the pioneer


figures of modern alternative cinema.
• One of the first Filipino to receive a
Rotterdam Hubert Bals Memorial grant,
and the first to won the prestigious Palme
d’or award at the 2000 Cannes Film
Festival for his short film Anino.

• 2. Nick Deocampo – a multi awarded filmmaker, film


historian, film literacy advocate, and currently an
Associate Professor at the U.P Film Institute College
of Mass Communication at U.P. Diliman.
• He practice non fiction documentary film and short
films such as
• 1. Revolution Happens like Refrains in a song (1987) a
post modern in People Power revolution of 1986.
• 2. Legacy of Violence (1990) which contributed
a view of the history of the country.

3. Manny Reyes –The Director of the Two Films
1. Dreaming Filipinos 1992 – It is a story of a man
raised in the Philippines whose only obstacle to
graduate and return to America, his birth place. He
was ask by the Professor ‘What’s wrong with the
Filipinos? Which he must answer in order to pass. This
movie won the best film at the Asian Youth Film
Festival.
2. Suwaping – A story of a citizen’s rebellion against
Barrio Talong Mayor whose plan was to dub a group of
Filipino-Americans as hometown heroes if they donate
a huge amount of money to him.

• 1. Brillante Mendoza – Thy Womb is about


the Tawi-Tawi husband, Bangas-an (Bembol
Roco and wife Shalela(Nora Aunor) who had
to end their marriage because tradition has
it that a man should leave his barren wife
and take another one who can bear him a
child.

• 2. Eric De Guia – also known as Kidlat Tahimik, is famous for
neo-colonial films and his short documentaries such as
Bubong.(2006)
• 3. Gil Portes of Quezon Province is best known for Mga
Munting Tinig (2002) which recounts the story of a young,
idealist, substitute teacher in a provincial public school. She
opposed her family’s expectations of her working abroad to
turn the state things around the hopeless and indifference
of her students to the corruption and violence of the
government and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The
film won 11 awards and was released by Warner Bros.

• 4.Auraeus Solito – Filmmaker from Palawan Ang
Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros – a coming of age film
about a gay teen, the slums and his infatuation with a
policeman, which results in a conflict given his family
illegal acts.
• 5. Alvin Yapan of Bicol Region 5 won the New Breed
category for his Debosyon (2005) a film about a connection
between love and faith, when a young man depends on the
Lady of Penafrancia to Lift the curse off the woman he
loves.
• 6. Erik Matti of Bacolod City Region 6 the director of the
first full-length Filipino film shot on green chroma-key
that mixes elements of action, comedy, and horror in
order to juxpose the old sensibilities of the aswang legend
with contemporary style ( Soriano 2012) Tiktik.: The
Aswang Chronicles.
