LINO BROCKA (Film, 1997)


 Director for film & broadcast arts, who used freedom of expression in the Philippine Constitution
 He took his social activist spirit to the screen leaving behind 66 films which breathed life & hope for the marginalized sectors of
the society – slum dwellers, prostitute, construction workers, etc.
 He also directed for theater with equal zeal & served in organizations that offer alternative visions, like the Philippine
Educational Theater Association (PETA) & the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP)
 He garnered awards & recognition from institutions like the CCP, FAMAS, TOYM & Cannes Film Festival
 His films includes:

ISHMAEL BERNAL (Film, 2001)


 The so – called Genius of Philippine Cinema
 His works were reflections of the existing realities of the Philippine society & the struggle of the Filipino people
 The significant element in his works was their symbolic details
 The recognitions he received:
 Director of the Decade of the 1970’s – Catholic Mass Media Awards
 Four – time Best Director (1989, 1985, 1983, 1977) – Urian Awards
 ASEAN Cultural Award in Communication Arts (1993)
 Among his notable films:
 Pahiram ng Isang Umaga (1989)
 Broken Marriage (1983)
 Himala (1981)
 City After Dark (1980)
 Nunal sa Tubig (1976)

MANUEL CONDE (Film & Broadcast Art, 2009)


 Manuel Pabustan Urbano, popularly known as Manuel Conde, started his journey in the world of film as an apprentice in
Philippine Films
 As an actor, he also used the screen name Juan Urbano during the 1930s aside from his more popular screen name

 Later on, he became the assistant director for sarswela film entitled Giliw Ko of the LVN Pictures
 He became a director & directed box office hit films like Ibong Adarna
 He also established the MC (Manuel Conde) Production & produced movies which mirrors & critiques the Filipino tradition,
customs, values & culture
 He introduced the local cinema to an international audience
 He directed and starred on 2 movies focusing on world history & literary figures entitled Genghis Khan & Sigfredo

GERARDO “GERRY” DE LEON (Film, 1982)


 A film director, who belongs to the Ilagan clan & as such grew up in an atmosphere rich in theater
 His first job while still in high school – was as a piano player at the Cine Moderno in Quiapo playing the musical accompaniment
to the silent films that were being shown at the time
 He was a medical practitioner by profession but because of his burning passion for cinema, he chose to pursue a career in
directing films
 His first directorial job was Ama’t Anak, in which he directed himself & his brother Tito Arevalo and the movie got good
reviews
 Ang Maestra - his biggest pre – war hit, which starred Rogelio de la Rosa & Rosa del Rosario with the still unknown Eddie
Romero as writer
 In the 50’ & 60’s, he produced many films that are now considered classics
 Daigdig ng mga Api
 Noli Me Tangere
 El Filibusterismo
 Sisa
 Among a list of films are:

 The Gold Bikini

RONALD ALLAN K. POE (Film, 2006)


 Born in Manila on August 20, 1939 and died on December 14, 2004
 Popularly known as FPJ (Fernando Poe Jr.)
 A cultural icon of tremendous audience impact & cinema artist & craftsman – as actor, director, writer & producer
 After the death of his father, he dropped out of UE (University of the East)in his sophomore year to support his family
 He was the 2nd of 6 siblings
 He married actress Susan Roces in a civil ceremony in December 1968
 Among his films were:

EDDIE ROMERO (Film & Broadcast Art, 2003)


 His real name was Edgar Romero y Sinco
 His career in the field of filmmaking started when he was still a student in Siliman University
 A screenwriter, film director & producer
 Gerardo de Leon ask him to write a screenplay for him resulted to his first script called Ang Maestra
 More opportunities that led him to write the following screenplays:
o Anong Ganda Mo
o So Long America
o Isumpa Mo Giliw
o *Mameng
o *Iniibig Kita
o *Hindi Kita Malimot
Note: * He became the Associate Director
 His first movie as a full – fledge director was the movie Kamay ng Diyos (1948) under Sampaguita Pictures
 He won the best director award for his film, Ang Prinsesa at Ang Pulubi (1951)
 Buhay Alamang – won the best screenplay in FAMAS
 Ang Asawa kong Amerikano – written by another playwright Luciano B. Carlos, won the best screenplay award in the Southeast
Asia Film Festival
 Ganito Kami Noon…Paano Kayo Ngayon? – set at the turn of the century during the revolution against the Spaniards and, later, the
American colonizers, follows a naïve peasant through his leap of faith to become a member of an imagined community
 Aguila – situates a family’s story against the backdrop of the country’s history
 Kamakalawa – explores the folkloric of prehistoric Philippines
 Banta ng Kahapon – his small political film, is set against the turmoil of the late 1960’s, tracing the connection of the underworld to
the corrupt halls of politics
 Noli Me Tangere – his 13 – part series brings the national hero’s polemic novel to a new generation of viewers
 A decade after the production of his first movie, he became a producer & established the Eddie Romero Production

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND ALLIED ARTS

PABLO S. ANTONIO (1976)


 He was known for his simple architectural designs consisting of clean lines & functional curves
 He did not focus much on the aesthetics of his design but the strength of the structure
 His main considerations in his structure were austerity & function
 The other thing that characterizes his structure is the maximum use of natural light & cross ventilation
 His works includes:
 Far Eastern University Administration & Science buildings
 Manila Polo Club
 Capitan Luis Gonzaga building
 Boulevard – Alhambra (now Bel – Air) apartments
 Ramon Roces Publications building (now Guzman Institute of Electronics)
 Theaters
o Lyric Theater
o Ideal Theater
o Galaxy Theater

LEANDRO V. LOCSIN (1990)


 An architect who has reshaped the urban landscape with a distinctive architecture reflective of Philippine art & culture
 Every Locsin building is an original, and identifiable as a Locsin with themes of floating volume, the duality of light & heavy,
buoyant & massive running in his major works
 From 1955 to 1994, he has produced 75 residences & 88 buildings, including 11 churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48
commercial buildings, six major hotels, and an airport terminal building

 Istana Nurul Iman – his largest single work, the palace of the Sultan of Brunei, which has a floor area of 2.2 million square feet
 The CCP Complex itself is a virtual Locsin Complex with all five buildings design by him – the Cultural Center of the Philippines
(CCP), Folk Arts Theater, Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Philcite, and The Westin Hotel

JUAN F. NAKPIL (1973)


 Is an architect, teacher and a civic leader, a pioneer and innovator in Philippine architecture
 His greatest contribution is his belief that there is such a thing as Philippine architecture, espousing architecture reflective of
Philippine traditions and culture
 It is also largely due to his zealous representation and efforts that private Filipino architects and engineers, by law, are now able
to participate in the design and execution of government projects
 He has integrated strength, function, and beauty in the buildings that are the country’s heritage today
 He designed the 1937 International Eucharistic Congress altar & rebuilt the Quiapo Church in 1930 adding a dome and a
second belfry to the original design
 Major works:

 Rizal Theater
 Capitol Theater
 Captain Pepe building
 Manila Jockey Club
 Rufino building
 Philippine Village Hotel

ILDEFONSO S. SANTOS (Landscape Architecture, 2006)


 Distinguished himself in pioneering the practice of landscape architecture – an allied field of architecture
 Producing four decades of exemplary and engaging work that has included hundreds of parks, plazas, gardens, and a wide range
of outdoor settings that have enhanced contemporary Filipino life
 He grew up in Malabon, made his first mark with the Makati Commercial Center where he introduced a new concept of
outdoor shopping with landscaped walks, fountains and sculptures as accents
 His contribution to modern Filipino landscape architecture was the seminal public landscape in Paco Park
 Most recent projects:
 Tagaytay Highland Resort
 Mt. Malayarat Golf and Country Club in Lipa, Batangas
 Orchard Golf and Country Club in Imus, Cavite

JOSE MARIA V. ZARAGOZA (Posthumous Conferment, 2014)


 His architectural structure was a mixture of modern and traditional designs
 Most of his works involved religious architectures (churches and convents) since he specialized in liturgical art and architecture
in the International Institute of Liturgical Art (ILLA) in Rome
 ILLA honed him to develop new techniques in designing Catholic Churches in the Philippines
 Some of his religious architectures include:
 National Shrine of the Nuestra Senora del Santissimo Rosario
 Santo Domingo Church and Convent
 St. John Bosco Parish Church
 The Pius XII Center
 The Convent of the Pink Sisters
 The San Beda Convent
 Aside from liturgical structures, he also designed secular buildings like:
 National Library – he is one of the architects
 Hotels and Hospitals
 Commercial and Residential buildings
 Office buildings which include
o Meralco building
o Philippine Airlines building
o Philippine Banking Corporation building

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR FASHION DESIGN

RAMON VALERA (2006)

 He have given the country its visual icon to the world via the terno
 In the early 40’s, he produced a single piece of clothing from a four – piece ensemble consisting of a blouse, skirt, overskirt, and
long scarf
 He unified the components of the baro’t saya into a single dress with exaggerated bell sleeves, cinched at the waist, grazing the
ankle, and zipped up at the back
 Using zipper in place of hooks was already a radical change for the country’s elite
 Dropping the panuelo – the long folded scarf hanging down the chest, thus serving as the Filipina’s gesture of modesty – from
the entire ensemble became a bigger shock for the women then
 He constructed the terno’s butterfly sleeves, giving them a solid, built – in hidden support
 To the world, the butterfly sleeves became the terno’s defining feature.
