International Labour Organisation

 ILO was set up on April 19, 1919


 The first specialized UN Agency
 ILO symbolises social justice, universal peace and human
dignity.
 Devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men
to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of
freedom, equity, security and human dignity.

 Responsible for drawing up and overseeing international
labour standards.

 The only tripartite UN agency - it brings together


representatives of governments, employers and workers
to jointly shape policies and programmes.

 ILO is made up of 185 Member States.

 ILO is like other inter- governmental agencies like (Food &
Agricultural organisation)FAO and WHO.

 Working for the universal cause


 Representation at all proceedings at ILO is given to workers
and employers beside governmental agencies.
 There are 3 groups, namely: “ the governments which finance
it, the workers - for whose benefit it is created and the
employers who share the responsibility for the welfare of
the workers.”

ILO Objectives
1. Full employment and raising of standard of living

2.The employment of workers in the occupation in which


they can have the satisfaction of giving the fullest
measure of their skill and make their contribution to the
common well-being.
3. Facilities for training and the transfer of labour
including migration for employment & settlement.

4.Policies in regard to wages & earnings ,bonus and other


conditions of work calculated to ensure a just share of
the fruits of progress to all and a minimum living wage
to all employed and in need of protection.

5. Effective recognition of the right of collective bargaining.

6.Extension of social security measures to provide a basic


income to all in need of such protection and
comprehensive medical care.

7.Adequate protection for life & health of workers in all


occupations.

8. Provisions for child welfare and maternity protection.

9.Provision for adequate nutrition , housing and facilities for


recreation and culture.

10.Assurance of equality of educational & Vocational


opportunity.
