The document discusses standardized testing in schools. The author believes that standardized tests should be eliminated or reduced because they do not accurately assess student knowledge for several reasons. Some students learn differently or may cheat, invalidating their scores. Additionally, promising students have missed opportunities because standardized test scores incorrectly categorized them. While comparisons among schools are a reason for standardized tests, the document argues they should be slowly replaced with a focus on classroom performance instead.

be eliminated from schools or at least reduce the number of them Standardized test don’t accurately asses students knowledge Many students haven’t had the full opportunity to succeed because a standardized test categized them incorreclty Opposing argument
Standardized tests are needed for
comparisons to be made among schools in regards to student achievement Why don’t standardized test accurately asses students Knowledge? All students learn and test differently so to give everyone the same test isn’t fair to students with special circumstances. Students can not be accurately assed if they cheated The Chicago teachers union has written a position paper which relates high stakes tests to the education achievement gap, the inability to adequately measure knowledge, the waste of instruction time with negative impacts on student learning, and testing scandals Missing opportunities
It is common for a young student with
promising potential to be prevented from being in the accelerated program because of standardized test scores Ex: a young boy was not put in the accelerated program at his elementary school, even though he showed great potential, but because his IQ score wasn’t high enough couldn’t be a part of it (Glaser). What to do?
Of course eliminating all standardized
test at once would cause chaos, so my solution would be to slowly fizzle out standardized tests and start to focus on class room ability
